Are the Marlins the only MLB team which, apart from Jackie Robinson, have no retired numbers?

 

Marlins 0, Rockies 1 (Todd Helton). Somehow the Rays have 2 (Wade Boggs, Don Zimmer). Is the rumor about the backroom HOF cap deal with Boggs true?

 

No. It's just that - a rumor. There's no evidence.

 

Agreed, retiring numbers is one of the lamest ways to honor someone.

As much a Yankee fan as I am, even I think they're overdoing it. They retire numbers at the slightest provocation. I mean, I'm not saying that there's necessarily those of them who don't deserve it...but just dial it back a bit, fellas.

 

They'll probably just go to three-digit player numbers.

Talking of the Marlins, they actually did have a retired number once: 5, in honor of the first ever team president (Carl Barger, who died before the Marlins played their first game, and whose favorite player was Joe DiMaggio). They unretired #5 when Logan Morrison asked to wear it because his father's favorite player was George Brett.

Exactly. I can get behind the pitch clock, but this is just silly.

Sport is strategy, the metaphorical field of battle. This is like one side declared "it's too hard," stamping their feet like a petulant child and the parent feels the need to level the playing field to make them feel better. Good players and good managers would find a way around it.

I know people have negative reactions to the Buck/McCarver team (And I was one of them) but he and Buck were the voice of the World Series throughout my time in middle and high school and college. That's quite the longevity.
