MLB Offseason 2020-21: I'm a Hall of Famer baseball person

This is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen.

I know this will shock everyone, but JD Martinez will not opt out of his deal with the Red Sox!

Can't say I blame him for taking the security. He had a miserable season and his knees are completely shot, and since no one knows if the NL will keep the DH in 2021 as of yet, the number of teams that would be interested in him is pretty minuscule; I can only think of maybe three or four AL teams off the top of my head with a gaping hole at DH.

I doubt any of them would pay him $20 million a year either.

Yep. Even in an offseason without ginned-up collusion and a push to drive salaries down (I was reading a report last night that said the league has told the union it wants a 30-35 percent universal salary rollback for 2021; thankfully Bruce Meyer's response was to tell Manfred to go fuck himself), teams wouldn't be falling over each other to throw $20+ million at a broken-down 33-year-old DH who OPS'ed .680 last year. Martinez's strikeout issue--which, in fairness, has dogged him throughout his entire career--also got significantly worse this season.

Baltimore has picked up Jose Iglesias' option. Obviously he's due for a regression (.407 BABIP, holy shit) but he's a solid clubhouse presence.

Have to say that I'm surprised to see the cheapskate Orioles actually spending money, though.

Edit: The Red Sox are expected to announce that they've re-hired Alex Cora, potentially as soon as tomorrow.

Yeah, there's no way he gets nearly $20 million on the open market, not after sitting out for a year and with how rough everything is looking at the moment.

I loved Stroman back when he broke in with the Jays, but recently, it seems like he'd rather be a social media star and run his mouth. He got called out by Randal Grichuk for being a prima donna during his time in Toronto and he only seems to be getting worse.

In news that should surprise absolutely nobody, Giancarlo Stanton has decided not to forfeit the $218 million he has remaining on his contract and is not exercising his opt-out.

AL Manager of the Year candidates are Kevin Cash, whose Snell decision will be hotly debated for years, Rick Renteria, who has recently been fired & Charlie Montoyo, who, as a Blue Jays fan, I can tell you was frustrating to watch on a game to game basis.

2020 hits again.

Well, aren't all awards based on the regular season after all? ;)

Was Renteria confirmed as a firing? Last I heard it was a "mutual" decision.

The Chicago Tribune made it pretty explicitly clear that it was a firing. The press release called it mutual, but Paul Sullivan did a really deep-dive piece maybe a week ago that went into pretty exhaustive detail about how Reinsdorf desperately wants another World Series win before he carks it, and how he overtly overruled Rick Hahn and Ken Williams by ordering Renteria's firing.

This is correct. All votes must be received prior to the first game of the postseason being played.

Also, this is the second time I can recall a fired manager getting manager of the year consideration (Girardi won the award in 2006 after the Marlins canned his ass).

You are right. Jerry loves Tony and bumped Renteria out of the way so he could hire Tony.

Correct. Sullivan's article quoted off-record sources within the organization as saying that Reinsdorf has always regretted letting Hawk Harrelson fire La Russa and decided to make one big go of it. The unspoken but implied thing was that Reinsdorf is sick and might not have a lot of time left.

The Mets' ownership change is official.

$2.475 billion.

And owners are going to cry that they can't spend in free agency because they're broke.

Won't they wait a few years like Ricketts did? Gotta make sure the fanbase is back in place.

Jeff Luhnow has sued the Astros for breach of contract and for making him "the scapegoat" of the cheating scandal.

"I was wrongfully fired by being fired for being too fucking stupid to know that the team I literally run is cheating" is a hell of an argument, but I cannot imagine this ever getting to trial; the Astros are going to settle, there's no way on Earth they--or Rob Manfred--want this to go to discovery.
