MLB Offseason 2018-19: SIGN KIMBREL AND KEUCHEL YOU FUCKS

Well, they're kind of in need of a shortstop since Gregorius is out for at least half of next season, and when he returns, they can stash Machado at third and shift Andujar into a utility role.

Granted, their bigger need is pitching, but it's not like they don't have a money cannon to aim.

I get your a giant, unapologetic homer, but come on! Only a Boston fan would be upset with 5 All-Stars, best record in the league, 2 Gold Gloves, an MVP finalist, a MOA finalist, and oh - an AL Pennant and a World Series win.
Must have MOAR titles....

*you're* (you know, since we're being dicks about it and taking swipes at people). I definitely follow/root for my team, but think I can see the warts a bit more than, say, a certain Yankees fan...

to be honest, I mostly overlook the A's because they're kinda a garbage franchise playing out the sting to cash checks at the moment. Happy being mediocre, not going take the next step, and always selling off anything good they have while buying players only to flip them later. They did make a nice run and won 22 games more than last year. Hard to judge roster year to year with it being in such flux,

Red Sox definitely had a good team, and massive payroll. Although the payroll advantage isn't so bad if you consider that Sandoval and Hanley were getting full salaries and not playing for the team out of that number. Plus Pedroia, i suppose. Sale missed the back half of the season, Rodriguez missed half of it, they non-ironically started Pomeranz, Velasquez, Wright, Johnson, Cuevas, and Beeks (almost a combined WHO?) 34 times, etc. Not like Cora just rolled out a '27 Yankees and smiled all the way to the bank. Add in that his entire managerial experience was running the Puerto Rican team once and Astros bench coach for a year.

Red Sox had essentially the same roster as last year (yeah, plus JDM), but improved that total by 15 wins despite the SP injuries, so sorry if thinking that made a strong MoY candidacy makes me a 'giant, unapologetic homer'. Especially since he managed to do something with the team (win it all) instead of starting a reliever in a one-game playoff and getting laughed out of the stadium (and playoffs). The A's had other starting pitchers and manager chose to go that route, no? (yes i know playoffs technically don't count for the award, but still something that happened). A's had to patch together a starting rotation (used 15 guys), but Red Sox used 11, it wasn't that far off.

Anyway, not 'upset' or demanding more awards, since you want to paint it as crying about it, just thought all things considered, Cora did more than an OK job for his first try. Maybe it just felt like a lot more because we had John Farrell the year before and he's a crapbag manager? Kinda feels like one of those things where the voters want to get cute sometimes and don't want to go with the obvious choices. Same reason why Trout isn't a lock for MVP most years, Ortiz never won one, or in Football how Belichick is widely considered one of the best couple coaches ever and has only won 2 times in 20 something years of coaching. The preferred storyline is 'coach who took a team expected to be mediocre and made them half-decent', not 'team expected to be pretty good and then played out of their minds' instead...

Like I said, happier with the ring and parade rather than the paperweight, but just felt like it was at least a closer race than it ended up being, especially the voter that didn't think Cora was in the top 3 in the AL...

That's a lot of words to say "Your right, Jedi_Master, I AM a homer, but I can at least be introspective about it..."

Figured showing my math would at least help explain the reasoning. And yeah, anyone follow a sport, have a favorite team, and NOT have more interest/knowledge about that team than others? Other than MLB, who is a little bit of a baseball slut? ;) "giant, unapologetic homer" was definitely too far, though.

And like I said, looking at Melvin more, *eh*, ok, can see the case at least, but just hadn't looked enough to notice. The A's are just content to not totally suck, not making an effort either way. Literally shitty stadium, will always sell anyone any good, even if they're doing ok, only buy players to flip at the deadline, etc. Even with 97 wins, not really a consideration in my opinion. They don't seem to care, so why should anyone else?

It's the BBWAA. A guy from Chicago radio gave Maddon a first-place vote for MoY, and a Rockies beat writer gave Lester a 4th-place vote and left German Marquez off his ballot completely for Cy Young. At some point you just have to shrug and accept that the BBWAA is, and will continue to be, completely full of shit until a bunch of people age out of it.

fact. same reason i highlighted the one ballot that left Cora off completely on the AL side. Out of 15 managers, the rookie who set a franchise record and then won the whole thing didn't even make the top 3

They're mostly clowns, and way out of touch usually. The behind-the-scenes on how the WS MVP got picked was an entertaining highlight as well.

You know who cares?
The fans. The players. The coaches.
Major League Baseball doesn’t care.

The city of Oakland (government) doesn’t care.

The ownership group doesn’t care (much).

But the fans care. The players care. The coaches care. Each does their part.
They aren’t always able to gel the parts and pieces together to make a decent team or keep a decent team together for a long period of time, but when they do make some magic happen - it’s a great ride. That’s why awards like this matter. Melvin probably won’t ever get to hoist a World Series trophy, at least not in Oakland, but his achievement can be noted for what it was - legitimate.

One final note on the “caring” bit - assuming “no one cares” because a team hasn’t won Championships or plays in conditions that aren’t the fault of the players or the fans is a mistake. Did no one care about the Red Sox when it took them 86 years to win another WS?
How about the Cubs?
Bob Melvin is the rightful Manager of the Year.
Next season he will coach another collection of cast-offs and rentals, and Rollie Fingers willing, we will take 5 out of 6 from you again.

Playing out the string maybe? ;)

You kinda hit the nail on the head on why I think Melvin was the more deserving of MoY over Cora. Those kind of monetary missteps would sink Oakland for a decade. The Red Sox just shrug and buy more, or already have stocked up on the depth they want.

I simply don't see Cora, as a rookie manager, winning 108 games under the type of restraints that exist in Oakland or even 96.

Easier to make a great meal when the cupboard is stocked with great ingredients. Not so easy when all you have is ground chuck and a box of generic Hamburger Helper.

Less about not knowing which to use, and more that I get a million pop ups when using that computer (certificate errors), so constantly getting pulled away from what I’m typing to hit ‘no’, so sometimes don’t notice that it missed a letter because it went to the pop up instead. No idea what the issue is, but don’t have admin rights to dig into it more...

But irony noted :)
