Manny's getting paid!

The Padres kind of surprised me (and, I’m guessing the White Sox front office too), but good for them.

They have money to burn and their farm system is considered one of the best in all of baseball. They're going to suck out loud this coming year because their pitching is still raw, but they're going to be scary by 2020.
Yeah, that makes sense. I'm just surprised he wanted to go there. Money truly does speak volumes, doesn't it?

In general, I would agree, but $300 million isn't mere chump change. I don't what he's like off the field (charities or otherwise), but his on-field behavior isn't what I would call sportsmanlike. Cal Ripken Jr., he's not.

What, just because he admitted to not running out a gimme ground ball that had him out 60 feet away?

And Cal Ripken, Jr., was in the starting lineup far longer than he should have been. He was an active detriment to the Orioles for much of the last decade or so of his career.

I really kind of hate this dogwhistle. He goes to the Padres, people say he was just looking for a payday. If he had signed with the Dodgers or Yankees, people would accuse him of being a ring-chaser.

Well isn't it kind of true. I mean if he went to a legit contender at least that would make sense but to go to Padres has got to be all about the money. They are not going to even be in contention. Which is fine. Nothing wrong liking money but as a fan it kind of sucks that it means he has basically vanished of the planet earth until he is someday traded to a good team in a couple of years.

Based on what I've seen in multiple different sports, being considered a ring chaser isn't a bad thing, In fact, people seem to respect athletes who want to win. Being a money chaser on the other hand, has a whole lot more negative connotation.

Like I said, the Padres will be lucky to win 75 games this year, but once they get their pitching sorted out--whether it all comes up from the farm or they trade prospects for arms--they're going to be scary good, and adding a generational player in Machado will only help that. I fully expect them to take the NL West in 2020.

It's reported that Chicago offered 20 Million more.... but all wasn't guaranteed?

Hell, I'd have picked San Diego for less, the weather is fantastic.

Screw playing in the windy city, especially for the unpopular Chicago team.

I think Philadelphia has a huge offer on the table for Harper. I also think Harper doesn't want to play for Philadelphia and is desperately hoping someone comes along with a better deal.
