MLB Offseason 2014-15: Wait, pitchers and catchers report WHEN?

In general, if you have to pay someone 150k to babysit your 20M player, probably means you shouldn't be giving them 20M. 25M in Hamilton's case, wasn't it? Glad the Sox dodged that bullet, there was a lot of calls to sign him...

If he did indeed have a cocaine and alcohol relapse (which is what the media narrative seems to be circling around by now), that basically makes him a zillionth-time offender under the JDA. Curious to see what kind of punishment the commissioner's office hands down.

On the other hand, it's either his 1st or 5th offense, depending on how they want to interpret things. He wasn't in the majors for his previous incidents. He was on a 40-man roster for some portion of that, however. Also admitted to it vice being arrested or failing a test. Definitely an interesting case. 15-25 game ban? A year? both could be in play depending on how you look at it.

It's a means to an end and if it leads to a championship the team doesn't care.

The Bulls carried Jack Haley to babysit Rodman back in the day.

Just saying, giving 25M to a player you explicitly don't trust seems like a bad plan. If they become untrustworthy DURING the contract, do what you gotta do to keep things from falling apart. But this was a known risk.

A-Rod practiced at 1B today, I think thats a great idea. He would be an excellent back up for Teixeira and replacement if Teixeria goes down. Extend his playing, with him about to turn 40 and all.

Only if he can play the position. His hips are still grinding to dust -- and beyond that, playing first requires an entirely different level of situational awareness.

In other news, word is that Josh Hamilton is looking at anywhere from a 25- to 162-game suspension. Funny how these "league discretion" punishments only seem to come into play when it's someone who makes a lot more money than the majority of the league.

Even at A-Rods advanced age and dubious health status, I imagine he's still a lot more athletic then most of the people who would make this move. I only see it as a positive.

^If A-Rod ends up being the Yanks' best option at 1B, that speaks more to the sorry state of their roster than it does anything positive he's doing.

OTOH, the Phillies are still trying to find a taker for Ryan Howard.

Just cross-pollinating a little here, but anyone interested in Fantasy Baseball? The BBS has it's own keeper league, and we're looking for a new owner to take over a team. Shoot me a message, or jump into the thread in this forum for more info. Thanks!

So the Phillies lost their first spring training game 6-2 to the #1-ranked NCAA Division II college baseball team, the University of Tampa Spartan. Bonus irony: one of the players involved in UT's five-run 7th was Andrew Amaro, Ruben's nephew. :brickwall:

It's going to be a loooooooong season...

That's embarrassing, especially as it was a Division II team.

How many of the Phillies front line guys were playing?

Darin Ruf (remember him?), miscast utility man Cesar Hernandez. And remember Brian Bogusevic? Otherwise it was the Iron Pigs' bench.

The most remarkable thing is that Phillippe Aumont failed to walk anyone.

Darif Ruff is still playing for the Phils?

Frankly, the story isn't really news for two reasons. One, nobody on that team is going to matter in the season. Two, the Phillies aren't going to matter either. But they'll be MLB bad, not Division II College bad. If this game were in July with the starters playing, it wouldn't have been the same result.

Good for University of Tampa, though. I bet it was fun for them.
