MLB Offseason 2014-15: Wait, pitchers and catchers report WHEN?

Oh, A-Rod got a couple hits in spring training.

We're going to the World Series baby!!!

Not sure about other teams, but there have always been periods when the Yankees didn't have a Captain.

In fact the only team left in baseball that still DOES have a captain is the Mets (David Wright). Red Sox haven't had one since Varitek.

easy to be the best when you have:

massive payroll
someone to blame whenever there's a bad signing, or non-signing

so, can throw around money, and if you make a mistake, not your fault. Tough job!

How would you look at the Yankees' roster and say Cashman's doing a good job, exactly?

So much of the Yankees' roster problems are due to Hal Steinbrenner and Randy Levine ordering Cashman to dumpster-dive because of Project 189 for several years -- a tactic that backfired when Steinbrenner decided that he wanted Tanaka no matter what, thereby making three years of scouring for shit worthless.

He's been severely hamstrung since George Steinbrenner died, because the only owners in professional sports who meddle more than Hal are Jerry Jones and Jed York. Cashman scouts and drafts extremely well (the only better GM when it comes to assessing pitchers is Brian Sabean and you can maybe make an argument for Kevin Towers, but he's so phenomenally incompetent at assessing everything else that his advantage gets washed out).

But as it stands, they traded a guy who would project as a #7 starter for the best defensive shortshop in the league, and Headley was a solid if unspectacular signing. The big question mark is the starting pitching, and every source in the country has said that Steinbrenner wouldn't let Cashman get in on guys like Lester and Scherzer.

If there's one thing the Yankees are known for, it's their fantastic farm system, of course  If he's the best at it, where are all their homegrown talents? Why's their farm system so baren? I can't even point to that many trades where their guy is tearing it up elsewhere. They've been just buying their talent for a long time, either in FA or internationally.

Boston didn't get Lester or Scherzer either, but still managed to remake their rotation (results pending, but there's at least promise there). Cashman wasn't allowed to spend 200M on one player, so there was nothing he could do but roll out what he had?

The Yankees' farm isn't barren, it's that their guys are still a ways away. Luis Severino is projecting to be a beast and will probably see time in the majors after the All-Star Break, and while Aaron Judge is still at least a year away, he has a world-class eye for taking pitches. Greg Bird is the guy who interests me the most, because he has a ridiculous ability to hit the gaps and his size makes me think he could stick at 1B or he could conceivably move to a corner outfield position.

They don't have the best farm system, particularly since they did trade a few decent guys to get Headley, but it's done a complete 180 from where it was about three years ago.

I'll give you that. Just rankings, for sure, but it appears to have gone from around bottom 5 or so to around 15th, give or take. Still not sure that puts Cashman in the "best" category. Teams like the Twins seem to do a lot better there. Then again, it's not translating onto the field at the moment, but when you can't buy your way out of trouble, those things tend to happen. The Rays' GM got out of Tampa just as that bubble was popping there. Without a #1 pick every year, he was suddenly not looking so brilliant...

Cliff Lee has another tendon tear in his elbow, which likely puts him out for the season and quite probably ends his career.

The Phillies' medical staff has now seen the end of the careers of both Halladay and Lee, and they helped ruin Ryan Howard's career (which didn't even need help ruining).

Trade Hamels before it's too late.

He seemed to wear out a bit early, but that might have had to do with playstyle somewhat.

Nice to see a little chat about my Yankees.
While I don't understand Cashman at times, it's not his fault that A-Rod is still owed 60+ million... It's not even his fault that we have him in the first place.

I of course liked resigning Headley and the Eovaldi signing was a great one I think.

I just read an article about some of the standouts in the Yankees farm system.

As Timby said, it's taken a marked move in the right direction in recent years.

I personally think Refsnyder or Pirela should be our second baseman. Resigning Drew was stupid.

Tanaka looked good, but that's no surprise really. He's damn good when his arm isn't falling off. Finger crossed.

We lost Capuano.... jeesh... just covering 1st... so now the #5 spot is open. Would be nice to still have .... never mind.

I've watched Didi a couple times... haven't seen that great glove yet, but I have seen him swing against lefties... I don't think "will work it out" as Girardi says is going to cut it. It's like he just can't pick up the ball. Hope all our new hitting coaches can straighten him out.

McCann is batting sub .150... hope he's a slow starter...

Tex is only around .200, we know he's a slow starter... but at least he appears healthy and says his wrist is pain free.

A-Rod hit a home run and all the articles say he's now "an asset" .... eeesh, he pulled an middle-in 88 mph duck on a 3-1 count. That's the only pitch he can hit out and he had to guess to do that.

I'm really looking forward to seeing CC take the hill.

Our defense and pitching better be strong, because our hitting line-ups can't match up with anyone in the east except maybe TB.

How would hit better and produce more for the team? A-Rod or Chris Young? I dare say the latter.

Delatances .... wow.

Don't know if you guys watch the MLB channel, but when they featured the Cubs, they all were drooling.

They think the Cubs can win now. Then of course, Lester goes out and makes 3 hitters look like little leaguers, so the gushing kept on coming.

I think they are a year away. That pitching staff just isn't strong enough yet. Very good looking young team though.

I've been recording "High Heat", brings back memories of listening to Russo on the radio when I was stationed in NY.

I love how you state that Tex and McCann cant hit shit in Spring Training and then complain about ARod who's batting around .400 and launched a HR only because it was grooved to him.

I love it too.

McCann just looks uncomfortable at the plate. I think I mentioned that Tex is always a slow starter, and A-Rod had to fight for a position.

Different motivations. I really don't care that A-Rod can hit shit spring training pitching, I hate that because he does that he's worth the money and the heartache.

Heartache? Oh, yes, truly, Yankees fans have suffered.
