MLB Offseason 2011

Plus a vesting option for a fourth year. Holy moley.

All general managers should have a clause in their contracts calling for immediate termination for cause if they sign a relief pitcher to a contract for three years or more.

Yeah, contracts for relief pitchers have gotten really crazy the last couple of years. It was insane how many no-name middle relievers got three year deals last offseason.

I can deal with a shutdown closer getting big bucks, but when the 7th inning lefty specialist gets megadough it makes no sense to me.

AA likes to claim he's in on everyone, though, and Fielder isn't signing shit until he sees where Pujols sets the market.

That's more with regards to trades, though. Seeing AA potentially actively involved in the free agent market would be a bit of a different step, though. Up until now, he's only signed guys to very short term contracts, or tried to improve the team through trades. We'll see if anything actually happens with this, but the team might be ready to make a big splash.

AA just traded for Jeff Mathis, so I'm inclined to think he's either on a bender or has gone temporarily insane.

Marlins offer Jose Reyes 6 years, $111 million with an option for a seventh year. The Mets are now reportedly out of the bidding and Reyes is all but gone, barring a change of heart.

Interesting. There was also a rumor that the Phillies were interested in him. I suspect they'll try to resign Rollings. The Mets are in a very big hole, though, if they lose one of their key players to a division rival (especially one not known for paying the big bucks).

Eh, we need a backup catcher for next season, and Mills has been consistently awful at the Major League level, so it was a decent trade.

I'm kind of curious how you can call the acquisition of a guy with a career average below the Mendoza line and a .558 career OPS "a decent trade."

There's simply no legitimate thought process that leads to, "Let's trade for Jeff Mathis!"

Sources say there a deal is done.

I wonder if he'll pull the classic move Mets free agents/traded players did in the 80s/90s. Show some glimpses of greatness, but a lack of consistency and spotty health in NY, then move onto another team and go on a 5 year run of awesomeness.

The only way this deal is evenly remotely worth it if Reyes can stay healthy during that deal. I'm used to 2 stints on the DL and missing 50 games from the guy.

Also, as a Mets fan, I feel like someone just shoved a car antennae up my pee hole.

That deal is insanely great value. Basically, Reyes got the contract Carl Crawford should have, and vice-versa.

Reports are that the Marlins are making an aggressive push for Pujols, and are hoping to get CJ Wilson or Mark Buehrle.

It's nice (disgusting) to see that an owner can say, "Fuck you, I've got all the money in the world, but until you build me a taxpayer-funded, half-billion-dollar mallpark, I'm trotting out teams with $30 million payrolls. Then I'll spend a zillion dollars. Deal with it as I scam the fuck out of you, bitches."

This week is the Winter Meetings, which usually signify the start of the Free Agency season. I really hope the Giants do something. Maybe not big like getting Prince Fielder, but they really need to boost up their offense badly and if they don't do anything this week I might be very disappointed. I like the Baseball off season, but the reason I haven't posted much in this thread is because my team has been invincible from any news whatsoever. Yeah securing that pitching staff (Lincecum and Cain) is huge for the team, but if you don't have the offense to give them run support, yeah I can understand why they might be thinking about leaving.
