MLB chatter 2009-10: The Offseason

Here's hoping that some good will come out of Melky's exit - meaning, Damon coming back (presumably in left field). There's talk that negotiations with him are commencing. :techman:

That 15 win season will drop to 11 or 12 in the much stronger AL East. Still a reliable arm at the back of the rotation is a nice thing to have.

It's also possible he'll win more games with a team that can actually provide run support.

Ridiculously so. They got hot late in September, then collapsed. Way too many guys (Garret Anderson, Greg Norton, Francoeur, Jordan Schaefer, Kelly Johnson) going out there and just plain old striking out or hitting into double plays.

Now that Brandon Morrow is a Jay, I am hoping that he is given the opportunity to develop consistency. He has the potential, he's just up and down, up and down.

^ The Mariners screwed up his development. He gets thrown in the bullpen by some people who are trying to save their jobs, then they give him a chance to start, then he's back in the bullpen, then they try to stretch him out back into a starter while still in the majors -- this would've happened to any college pitcher they took in the first round that year.

^Bruce Walton took over from Brad Arnsberg as pitching coach for this year. I am sure he is well aware of Seattle's approach with Morrow. It'll be interesting to see what he can teach him.

Holy crow! The Mets just signed someone that's not a third string catcher or irrelevant minor league pitching has been.

Jason Bay to the Mets...

I love Jason Bay, and he did great for the Sox, but the image of him running around that cavern of a left field in CitiField is hilarious. The man is a good slugger, but not a good outfielder, and that may hurt the Mets sometimes.

Mark DeRosa signed a 2 year deal with the Giants. I like the move. We need more in terms of hitting and power, but DeRosa is a decent player that will only add to the line up.

He better be a good slugger to hit it out of that airport hangar of a stadium. Is he that bad of a fielder?

I'll take him over Fernando Tatis or any of the other warm bodies they used out there last year.

He really isn't a good fielder. He has bad range, and gets bad jumps on the ball. That could be hidden at Fenway with the monster, but in CitiField, not so much.

He can hit for power though, he really can. And he is a fastball hitter, which means he should do good in the NL. However, I could yell at the man from behind home plate, that the pitcher is gonna throw a slider, and he would still miss it by about 2 feet. He is kinda a white, Canadian, Pedro Cerrano from Major League.

I don't mean to diss the guy now that he is gone, he did great in Boston, but he is what he is.

Citi Field has this goofy wall that changes height at whim. It's also very angular.

They've had some odd bounces there.

Where does everyone think Johnny Damon will end up? His choices are dwindling as every week passess. Mark DeRosa signed with the Giants (even though he'll likely play every position, not just the outfield), Marlon Byrd signed with the Cubs, Melky Cabrera was traded to the Braves (though the Braves could still an outfielder), Jason Bay signed with the Mets, Matt Holliday is apparently close to signing with the Cardinals. He's running out of options.

As a Yankees fan, I would like to see Johnny Damon return, however, I want to see him return on a 1 year, incentive laden deal. A line up featuring:

Derek Jeter SS
Johnny Damon LF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Nick Johnson DH
Jorge Posada C
Curtis Granderson CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF

Is the best line up in the entire Major Leagues, bar none (though you can aruge without Damon in the line up, it's still the best line up in the league).

I really like the moves Cashman has made this off-season, though it is difficult to see Hideki Matsui sign elsewhere. We've gotten younger and I believe better than the 2009 championship team. Cashman could make another trade, maybe for David DeJesus of the Royals or Juan Rivera of the Angles, but I doubt it. Maybe he is content with Brett Gardner in LF, something I doubt as well.

Uhhhh...I don't think Juan 'klepto' Rivera will be allowed anywhere near the Yanks locker room soon.

I'd like to see them sign Damon as well. But I can see why he wants a multi-year deal. He's not getting any younger and the guaranteed money is nice.

Plus if the Yanks resign him, he won't revert to his vagrant look he had while playing in Boston.

Adrian Beltre to the Red Sox (reported 1 year, 9 mil, with player option for 5 mil next year).

Wasn't in love with him at the price he wanted, but seems like a good deal for basically a 1-year deal. They'll have to move Lowell and/or Kotchman, but it doesn't hamstring them so much that they couldn't still go after a big 1B mid-season, or next offseason.

At first I was a little worried when I heard that the Sox signed Beltre, but once I saw that it was for one year (with an option for a second), I relaxed a little bit. If he intends to use this season to crank up his numbers so some other foolish team can sign him to a big deal next offseason, that's fine by me.

I'm liking the Sox' infield defense, though.
