MLB Chatter 2008

Cubs/Sox would be good, but considering all the Boston connections that the Dodgers have, a Dodgers/Sox Series could be an entertaining one as well.

Then again, the Angels aren't exactly out of it yet, and Tampa could be a rough 7 game series for any team, so there's a ways to go yet.

The theory was that if the Sox could at least split while out west, and then Beckett is close to form for Game 3, they'd be all set, so Game 1 was a big help there. Dice-K doesn't inspire confidence, but the slippery bastard HAS managed to win 18 games somehow, so there's always a chance. Seems to think it's funny to load the bases, and then becomes unhittable. If someone just spoke enough Japanese to tell him to cut the crap and just pitch like that the whole time, he'd be sick...

I hope for the sake of the White Sox players that they got a good night's sleep. Turns out according to Ghost Hunters last night, the hotel in St. Pete's where almost all the visiting teams stay at is haunted. Some players refuse to sleep in rooms on a certain floor alone or not at all.

On second thought, maybe not. I'm sure Jerkzinski probably scared all the ghosts away.

There was in interesting blurb on SI.com this morning, mentioning the Cubs' right-handed power vs the Dodgers right-handed pitching. Soriano specifically was mentioned.

I think winning Game 1 was HUGE for both the Sox and the Angels. It gives the Sox confidence, and the Angels have to have it in their heads "here we go again". And its even more important because with Dice-K he could be dominant for 7 innings, or he could struggle through five. I do like him against a team like the Angels, who swing at a lot of pitches, and are aggressive at the plate.

I'm guessing A.J. didn't scare off the ghosts based on what happened today. I just keep picturing Ozzie Guillen hearing evil-sounding voices in the middle of the night and running through the hotel shrieking at the top of his lungs.

Sabathia is liable to become another one of those gusy who's absolutely studly in the regular season then wilts like a violet under the heat of the post season. C.C. had notohign last year in the playoffs, and this year served up 5 runs fairly quickly, including the grand slam with 2 out.

To be fair to the guy, he's been asked to go on three days rest for a while now.

Phils are leaving lots of men stranded. I really hope that doesn't come back to bite them.

Very true, mimic. That's an awful lot to ask of a pitcher who isn't used to it. Gotta give him credit for being such a gamer, though

The Phillies win it, 5-2. Lidge gets the save, a night after having thrown more pitches in one inning than he'd thrown all season, or so I thought they said. They look pretty good, even if it has been only 2 games. They've had superb starting pitching, timely hitting, excellent fielding. It's way too early to give any team the pass to the WS, but the way the Phillies ended the season and the way they're playing right now.... nobody better take them lightly.

Honestly, I am watching the Cubs-Dodgers game right now and all I can say is:

The Poor Cubs...honestly, that franchise has suffered enough, give them a fucking break.:(

Uh, here's to another hundred years of failure? 'Cause that's what it looks like will happen the way that both of Chicago's best pitchers are fairing against the goddamn Dodgers right now.

Edit: Well, you're right, but Joe Torre's not one to let his foot off the gas pedal.

The Cubs will get that break, eventually. Wasn't that long ago people had a similar lament in support of the BoSox, after all. But I hear ya ..... with games like these first two, is it any wonder that Cub Fan gets that cancerous pit in his stomach every post season?

I have to ask... has Zambrano been this inconsistent the whole season?

You're blaming Zambrano? If DeRosa could field that ball cleanly it'd be a much different game.

Zambrano got his ground balls. The defense failed him.

I just watch the Cubs and I feel the pain of watching the pre 04 BoSox...I.E. everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. I mean in that second Zambrano gets a perfect DP ball, and it gets booted...then a ball hit right to Derek Lee, same deal. Then he gets the second out, and gives up a double to the bearded one...a double that clears the bases.

Again, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. That look of pain and disbelief the Cubs fans have, I have seen that look in the mirror many times pre 04. Hell, just the words Aaron Boone gives me that look.

I have been unable to watch any of the game. Looking at the score it was easy to presume that the same Zambrano form the previous couple of game swas pitching tonight. From what I'm hearing he has pitched decently well. Two runs earned, six hits and six K's is a good night. There is the one home run, though. It's a good effort, enough so that yes you can lay the blame on the defense. Yet even so I expect my #1 started to be able to fight through the jams when possible.

Yeah, it was totally the defense tonight. I mean Zambrano had to get practically five outs with the bases loaded...when that happens you are going to get burned eventually.

That has got to be one of the worst performances by a team that I've ever seen in the postseason. Big Z wasn't angry at himself anytime a run scored; he was angry at the defense for completely failing him. It's shaping up to be another long century for Cubs fans.

Seriously. It's just ugly.

Regarding the Sox/Halos last night, that was a solid pitchers' duel until the 6th inning. Lester just brought better stuff and gave the Sox a huge boost with a Game 1 win. However, the Angels certainly have it in them to win three in quick succession, so it'll be a pressure cooker for a while.

I try, but they bring it amongst themselves. I mean the Dodgers aren't just going to roll over and let the cubs win, and I must say, they've looked surprisingly dominant this series. I wish the Cubs just knew how to play Postseason baseball. Eventually they'll get it, but most of it is their doing.
