MLB Chatter 2008

Between Sabathia to the Brewers and Harden to the Cubs, shit just got serious in the NL Central.

Yes it did and I wanna see what the Cards do to try and counter it. The Cubs are gonna regret trading for Harden cause I can see him going on the DL in a month. Billy Beane ain`t trading him if he is healthy and will go the rest of the season with out a problem because he is under club control till 2010 I believe.

I doubt they'll regret it. They basically gave up Sean Gallagher and a bag of balls. The question becomes, to win NOW, who helps you more? Harden or Gallagher? The answer is Harden. Plus, Gaudin is a nice addition to the Cubs as well and he can start if necessary. And as you say, this isn't a rent-a-player...they'll have Harden for next season too.

That's entirely possible, but on the other hand, it's also entirely possible that Billy Beane's methodologies as a GM are no longer as sound as they were at the start of the decade. He's just as entrenched in his philosophies as every other GM in the league, and he's also well-known for getting strange boners over borderline players. (He's probably seeing Murton as the cornerstone of the deal, but a 27-year-old who can't play his way out of AAA isn't your left fielder of the future.)

At the same time, Murton was never going to be more than a fourth outfielder with the Cubs, Josh Donaldson was blocked by Geovany Soto, and you never know what in hell you'll get from a Patterson. I don't see big regrets coming from this trade. This is a Cubs team that is on the old side and it's not getting any younger -- this year is the team's chance to win the World Series.

Now if we were able to sign him for 4 years then I would be saying something different cause we could move Ollie Perez now. Of course I feel sorry for whoever signs him for 5 or more years cause he looks like hes gonna get real fat really quick.

Four years or five, half of that contract would be for an overweight pitcher on the wrong side of 30.

Harden's an injury liability and he's lost a lot of velocity. Gaudin's essentially his backup. No real skin off of Oakland's back and it's not the blockbuster deal for the Cubs that people seem to think it is.

Another instance of giving Billy Beane the benifit of the doubt just because of his reputation. Maybe this might be a good trade in the end, but I don't like it (And I was not sure about the Swisher trade either, so there is consistency). We get rid of another star pitcher, granted he gets injured but he did make a great one-two punch with the Duke, and we get more prospects and some guys we know nothing about. This team doesn't want to go big to another world series. They are a major league farm system, again. Still, Beane has shown his genious so we have to trust him but when is enough enough. The A's in terms of attendence and publicity have been a laughing stock ever since Al Davis came back to oakland and built that monstrocity of Mount Davis, and until that new stadium (Which we don't know when it's happening) they will continue to scoop the bottom of the barrel. As an A's fan, this is really fruastrating.

Wow, we're down 4-2, I turn away to do something else, and when I get back it's 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th and Hamilton hits a 2 run homer putting us on top 5-4.

Checked the scores earlier today and was pleasantly surprised by the Sox 18-5 win. Guess those (correctly) reversed calls make a difference! :techman:

I'm confident that since the Cubs were happy with whichever doctors they've talked to that Harden must be healthy enough, at least. Especially if he's starting on Saturday, as is rumored. That gives them another (with Zambrano) starter with Cy Young-quality stuff. I'll take that for Sean Gallagher and three guys who were either blocked or AAAA players any day of the week.

Okay, I'm a Twins fan, and that was just ugly. It's been a few days, but I still think it was ugly. They were correct to reverse the triple play (the ball was trapped), and no doubt the Twinkies deserved to lose, but it's been a long time since I've seen that many bizzare calls in one game.

You know something's wrong when your starter gives up a two run double to Randy Johnson to start the rally and Randy comes around to score.....

^With the Cubs enterring the All-Star break in first in the Central and the Diamondbacks miraculously doing so in the West, I'd say we're all dreaming.

It's just the ones from near Boston or from Boston and moved.

The guy probably deserved it, have you seen the way people from NY and CT drive? ;)

Well it goes both ways. A few months ago, a woman who was a Yankee's fan ran over a Sox fan in NH.

And killed him, too, as mentioned in the last paragraph of the linked article. I'm actually rather surprised that this whole pair of incidents hasn't drawn snarky comments from at least one moderator.

And in other news...Youuuuuuuuuuukkkkkk! :)

Yes, the Youk is the man. And Drew this year is en fuego. And in other news, Julio Lugo is out 4-6 weeks. While I never want to see player hurt, I do feel that his absence will help the team, and allow Jed Lowrie a chance to see what he can do.
