MLB Chatter 2008

And since I won't be able to say this ever again...

HA! The Nats are 1st in the NL East!

Well, I went to the ballpark to watch the Giants game and it was a fun afternoon. The Giants absolutely blew though and I think that will be the norm this season. I know it's one game, but that was atrocious. I blame Sabean more than anyone else. That guy should be fired as soon as humanly possible.

He is the GM, the buck stops and all that. But, it's been a team effort with ownership adding to the current pile.

Brian has made both good and bad moves over his tenure, and who would you have come in now that is available?

Anyway, if they lose and play the younger guys, at least then something will come of the season. Plus no problem getting good seats this year....

All right Pirates! I knew you had it in you to pull out a win eventually! :)

By the way, I applaud this forum's new description! :techman:

Hell, their AAA team beat the crap out of Zito the other day. It's going to be a long season for the Giants. They just haven't made a lot of good moves the last few years.

Wish I could have watched a few of the games tonight, but hope I get to see some later this week. Good to know Gag-me still blows huge. I think even I could bat .500 against him.

Boy, as upset as I was of the Johan Santana trade, that Gomez kid looked great. Man, can he fly!

He had two stolen basses ... on pitch-outs!! Plus a double, bunt single and walk.

Gomez is a speed demon. If he can continue to get on base, it'll certainly take some of the sting out of the Santana trade. I still think the Twins got more out of the Garza trade than they did the Santana trade, though.

You know, there are common sayings in this time of the year for baseball like:

-It's only one game
-It's only preseason
-It's not time to panic

Yet when I look at the Giants, I don't think any of those statements apply. I mean we lost to the Fresno freaking Grizzlies for heaven sake. For those who don't know who they are, they are the Giants Triple-A team. So a Major League (So-called) team lost to a triple-A team. Yes it was preseason but it was that game where I realized that while it is Spring Training, it was a very telling sign of what to expect. So jump ahead to opening day, Mr 126 million on the mound, and what happens. A Big fat goose-egg, and how many hits did this team get? 5. How the hell can the management go to bed at night and put this line-up on the field. How can someone who takes an hour just to run a 100 meter dash be the clean-up hitter. This team is a laughing stock of Major League Baseball this year. Now I'm a fan and will watch them, but this team is going nowhere. It's embarassing that we got a beautiful ballpark, a great city, and proud history and this is the team that is going to be the 2008 Giants.

You're damn right those three statements don't apply to the city of San Francisco and it's Baseball team. It's a joke and it's not going to get any better because of the management and decisions the last few years. It's sad but at least we still have the A's. They are 500 and should have won 2 in a row in Japan. Still, as a Giant fan, I don't know what else to say. :(

Sorry for the rant.

Nah - the Nats aren't going to be the laughingstock by any stretch. They've gained some good young players, so they should at least be competitive most any day. Last season, they far outplayed what was expected. No way they are contending this year, but they won't be the worst team in the league at all.

I just saw the highlights from the Pirates-Braves game last night. That would have been one hell of a cloud hanging over Jason Bay if Nady didn't homer in the 12th.

Tight game between the Jays and Yanks to open the season. Halladay was in good form, but unfortunately it looks like we may be back to that terrible lack of clutch hitting. ARGH! There's nothing more frustrating than stranding runners in scoring position throughout the game.

Hopefully Wells and Thomas can get into form quickly, that'll be key.

If I were Matt Cain, I'd be looking to get out of San Francisco pronto. He should be the Giants' ace, but Zito makes more money. He should have a better record, but he has little support in the field, no offense, and pitiful back-up in the bullpen. He would be the top starter on any other team, but his career's going to die the longer he stays there.

I agree with everything you just said. Why Matt Cain wasn't the starter I only blame one person, Brian Sabean. Damn he's a total duchebag.

On the Red Sox end, very nice performances against the A's yesterday and today by Dice-K and Jon Lester. While he may be facing the Athletics, not a great hitting team, seeing DiceK not walk anyone was very very nice. And David Ortiz got out of his funk, blasting the crap out of an Alan Embree fastball. Two nice games overall.

Boy, watch the players fall to the DL early. Pedro and Putz join a growing list of injured key players.

I just finished reading The 33-Year-Old Rookie this week - about Phillies backup catcher Chris Coste and his 11-year minor league odyssey before finally cracking the majors. Pretty fun and quick read...worth checking out if anybody's interested in a baseball book right now.

The Twins are giving the world a hitting seminar: 17 ground outs last night and 5 double plays tonight.

Morneau has yet to hit the ball out of the infield.

In his Major League debut, Blackburn pitched an outstanding game pitching seven innings giving up only one really flukie run while making Guerrero look silly in the process, and he gets absolutely no help.

I know it's way too soon to press the panic button, but I really want to.

Good follow-up game for the Jays tonight. A W for Burnett, a save for Accardo and a home run for Wells; that's more like what I want to see!
