MLB Chatter 2008

My alt pick for best team is the Padres cause I love their pitching and pitching always makes you a contender.

Their pitching is always good, but they can't score a freaking run to save their lives. Thats their down fall. You can't win if you loose every game 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, etc.

And I still think the Phillies will beat the Mets to win the NL East.

That aside, my streaky NY Metropolitians are on a hot streak and Carlos Beltran is on a role. Hopefully nobody throws him a curveball so he can stay on his tear

So blunt, yet so true.

Oh before I forget. "The best team in the NL" is 3 and 7 in their last 10. Lost 2 outta 3 to Los Mets and just got swept by the Cubbies. Time for them to lose to the Rockies and Tigers. In case anybody cares, I say when the Mets are on they are "The best team in the NL" but I`m just a tad biased. My alt pick for best team is the Padres cause I love their pitching and pitching always makes you a contender.

Yet the D-Backs are STILL 23-15 despite those losses. In the NL, only the MARLINS have a better record, and even then, only because they've played one less game.

For what it's worth, the Padres pitching is nowhere near as good as the Diamondbacks. Suck on that.

Well, Gagne and Izzy appear to be taking a little "mental break" from closing. I.E. they have been sucking, and are fired from being the closer, but are being paid too much to fire outright...

Not if you don't have any run production backing them up. The Padres are currently in the cellar according to ESPN. Hardly the best team in the NL.

Exactly. The Padres are the worst team in Baseball mainly because they can't hit. They're kind of like the Giants in that they have great pitching but that doesn't get you anywhere with bad offense.

Unbelievable! Cleveland Indians second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera turned an unassisted triple play tonight. It was the 14th ever in the history of MLB. Know when the last one was? Almost exactly one year ago, on April 29, 2007 by the Colorado Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki. Unreal that out of only 14 ever unassisted triple plays, two happened one year apart.

Standings in May mean nada to me. Now if Aug comes around and the Padres are still dead last then, then I`ll retract my statement. Right now the Marlins have the best record in the league and the Tigers are in last place. Arizona is a good team but they are not the best team in the league.

If I had to win game 7 of the World Series, I`m starting Jake Peavy before I start Brandon Webb.

Enough with the NL west. Los Mets dropped their second game on this homestand in craptacular fashion by getting blown out by the Nats. I figured the Mets would go 5 and 2 on this homestand and Maine should pitch a good game tommorow. I`m looking forward to the subway series this weekend as I have tickets to Sundays game. It sucks that I`m gonna miss Santana but at least Hank will have a chance to see him pitch a gem friday night.

Sweet! I love unassisted triple plays! Hopefully someone will put it up on YouTube.

As much as it was a nice defensive play, it was more a case of alert play on Cabrera's part. I watched the replay and it looked like one of the runners just didn't understand what was going on, as he was within a step or two of second base and therefore being safe. Cabrera alertly saw this and tagged him.

To put the play in perspective, there have been more 4-homer games (by the same player) and more perfect games pitched than there have been unassisted plays!

Oh, I know how rare unassisted triple plays (or even double plays). I actually performed an unassisted double play in high school. The highlight of my professional baseball career. :D

Rather odd that the Indians have been involved in 6 then....

I goofed up on this part. Apparently, the runners were off with the crack of the bat, since it was a hit-and-run play. Both had passed second when Cabrera caught the line drive.

It's a pity they ended up losing that game, since he made such a historic play and Cliff Lee pitched another gem.

I knew unassisted triple plays were rare, but until last night I had no idea that they were rarer than perfect games.

An impresssive, heads-up play by Cabrera, but there was also a bit of dumb luck involved: He was in the right place during a hit-and-run play. I having a feeling most unassisted triple plays come under similar situations.

When it comes to the unassisted triple play, I would imagine it's nearly always a case of good fortune. At least moreso than the talent in play.

yep, talent really has NADA to do with it. Just gotta be in the right place, with the right set of circumstances. AND close enough that it makes more sense to tag the last guy rather than throw him out.

In this case, it only worked because it was a hit and run play. Caught the ball, stepped on 2nd base to get the guy that was almost to third. The guy that started at 1st had actually already gotten past 2nd base, so rather than throw back to 1st to get him out, it was easier to just tag him, as Cabrera was still standing there from getting the 2nd out, and the runner HAD to try and tag 2nd on his way back to first, so had to go right by the guy with the ball.

Not exactly a huge athletic play, or even a case of the guy being heads-up. Mostly the runners being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or the bonehead that put the ball in the air on a hit and run play. Cabrera just caught the line drive near 2nd base, and then stood on the bag, getting the 2nd out and tagging the 3rd out as he tried to run back past him...

Arizona is a good team but they are not the best team in the league.

That is correct. Right now that would be The BoSox for all of MLB and a tie bewtween the Marlins, Diamondbacks and Cubs in the NL alone.

"Best Team" can change on a daily basis. It's not a permanent fact.

If I had to win game 7 of the World Series, I`m starting Jake Peavy before I start Brandon Webb.
1. That would be a bad call.
2. Brandon Webb is not the only good pitcher on the D-Backs staff. Apart from Peavy, what other "great" pitcher does does San Diego have? Pitching in SD starts and stops with Peavy. Arizona has Webb AND Haren AND up and coming stars in Micah Owings (who can also hit) and Max Scherzer who will be a Cy Young contender in his own right in years to come.

He is just mad, seeing as how many Mets fans were already crowning themselves NL champions, when their team is good, but its not the end all be all of NL teams, and if everything does not work out just right for them, they are just a pretty good, not great team.

That said, the Padres also started Jake Peavy in their playoff game against the Rockies, look what happened then. Peavy is a BEAST of a pitcher, but I would take Webb right now as well.

And I am excited, seeing as how I just bought tickets for Wednesday nights Orioles/ Red Sox game. I have always wanted to go to Camden Yards.
