CC Sabathia announced his retirement today.

In tragic news, umpire Eric Cooper, who worked the Yankees / Twins ALDS just two weeks ago, has died at 52 from a post-surgery blood clot. As someone with a relatively rare blood clotting disorder, that's a huge yikes for me, but it's just sad to see a life end so early. And Cooper was a pretty good umpire.

Society turns on the underdog pretty quickly lately. They love you when you're scrappy and hungry, but the second you start winning, you're old news and they hate you for it; they're ready for the new underdog.

Ain't that the truth. I'm on another message board that also has a yearly baseball thread and it's amazing how many non-Red Sox fans were pulling for them to win in 2004 but now have utter contempt for the team.

Cooper was an excellent umpire. RIP, man in blue.

After the Astros' victory in Game 7, an assistant GM repeatedly shouted "Thank God we got Osuna! I’m so fucking glad we got Osuna!" to three female reporters.

Yikes.

Uggghhh....

Yeah, talk about a bad look. And then the Astros doubled down, issuing a statement that he was merely "supporting a player during a difficult time."

Edit: Passan with an excellent take.

The least-surprising thing about the Houston Astros isn't that their assistant general manager stood in the clubhouse immediately after they clinched a World Series berth and taunted a group of female reporters by bragging about the acquisition of closer Roberto Osuna, who last year was suspended 75 games for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. It's that the Astros organization stood behind him. This is how they operate.

The Astros' response Monday night to a Sports Illustrated report that Brandon Taubman, an assistant GM, repeatedly yelled, "Thank God we got Osuna! I'm so f---ing glad we got Osuna!" wasn't just tone deaf. It was stupid. It was insulting. It was demeaning. It also was false, as other reporters who witnessed the incident soon confirmed.

The immediacy with which the organization backed Taubman comes from the same strain of hubris that fueled Osuna's acquisition in the first place. The absurdity of the statement cannot be overstated. In it, the Astros confirmed that Taubman made the comments but said they were in support of an Astros player. "His comments had everything to do with the game situation that just occurred and nothing else," the statement said.

The game situation was simple: Osuna had given up a home run and blown a save that would have clinched the pennant. So of all the times for Taubman to say "Thank God we got Osuna!" of all the moments to repeat, "I'm so f---ing glad we got Osuna!" he chose the night that Osuna frittered away a lead? And it just so happened to be in the presence of a group of women, including one who was wearing a purple bracelet for domestic violence awareness?

Yikes.

Sounds like a classy organization to be part of.

This promises to be an outstanding World Series with great pitching and timely hitting. My only wish is that we didn't have to put up with Joe bleepng Buck as the announcer. Let Smoltzy and any other play-by-play guy do it. Oh well, there's always turning the sound off and listening to ESPN Radio. Joe Buck genuinely sucks.

He does suck but he's better with John Smoltz than the old days with Tim McCarver. I'll take that over the shit from McCarver.

I think the Nats have flipped the script on the World Series. After beating Gerrit Cole, they have Strasburg, in excellent form, going tonight against Verlander, who has not been dominant in his last few starts. If Washington wins tonight, in the immortal words of Dandy Don Meredith, "Turn out the lights the party's over."

I wouldn't have thought the Nats would win with Cole pitching. Oh well, on to the next game.
