MLB 2019: Mad Max Beyond Astrodome

I used to think that. Then I think about owners who squeeze every last dollar out of cities, fans, broadcasters, and merchandising partners.

That's true because again, these are businesses. But guys holding out for $400B and then not living up to those contracts when they do get them. I mean, those guys probably will draw more fans, so the teams see it as an "investment" that leads to more revenue.

I can actually see both sides of the argument.

Just think of the players as independent contractors. :techman:

I'll tell you what: I'll stop advocating for superstars getting $300 million contracts the minute minor league players get paid a living wage instead of having to subsist on shit like $15,000 a year.

Oh, wait, that's right. MLB successfully lobbied to get MiLB players exempt from minimum wage requirements with the "Save America's Pastime Act."

I completely agree with the part about the minor leaguers, there's a massive pay gap there. And hell, if a team wants to pay a guy $400M, that's their malfunction. Probably more misses than hits on those big payouts (excepting the "investment" I mentioned).

But I don't think it's wrong for teams in general to be wary about handing out those contracts and just not caving in.

Of course a GM’s job is to spend his resources wisely, but teams should be spending. People come to see the players play, not the GM.

Only drama this week is Rays, A's or Cleveland, and to see if the Cubs win again.

The Cubs' only shot at the postseason is to go 6-0 this week and pray for the Brewers and Nationals to shit the bed, which would result in some Game 163 chaosball (always pray for chaosball).

Unfortunately, the likelihood of this happening is roughly equivalent to the odds of my ex-wife begging to take me back.

More or less exactly the same for the Mets.

Let me be the first to wish you and your new wife all the best ;) The f-ing Cubs lost to the (even more) f-ing Pirates while Milwaukee won. Milwaukee goes 0-5 while the Cubs go 5-0??? Not f-ing likely. I'll be surprised if the Cubs win one more game this year.

Joe and his whole staff need to be done. I don't think one player is listening to any of them anymore.

I have to say, it is heartwarming that the Nationals made the playoffs and the Phillies didn't.

Money isn't everything, Bryce.

The Cubs have officially been eliminated from playoff contention, while the Cardinals and the Brewers have both clinched postseason berths.

The last few years have been an aberration. I feel strangely comfortable reverting back to my "Anyone But the Cardinals" philosophy; it's like putting on an old T-shirt.

Apparently the "Cardinal Way", like the "Patriot Way", is really a thing. I feel like the Cubs are better on paper, but somehow they end up taking a shit 2 straight years. That's on the coaching staff not getting the best out of these guys.

Injuries were a small part of their problems too, but who knows.

I mean, it's a systemic failure. The Cubs under Epstein have continued to hug certain guys too long (Schwarber, Almora, fucking Russell), and with regards to player development, until this year they continued to focus on low-velocity guys pitching to contact, praying they could develop the next Hendricks. (Arrested Development narrator: "They couldn't.")

The constant changes in the coaching staff have absolutely stunted Bryant, and I have a strong feeling that's why he's reverted to that long power swing that leaves a massive, gaping hole on the inside, especially low and inside. (I'm reminded of how the Bears fucked Jay Cutler by giving him like four offensive coordinators in five years or something like that.)

I agree that Maddon needs to go, as well as the coaching staff (well, I guess Tommy Hottovy can stay, considering he got Darvish un-fucked, and I've always liked Mark Loretta), but I don't really know who would be an ideal replacement. Girardi is known to want the job, but he and Epstein would get along like oil and water, and beyond that, hiring a red-ass jackwagon is just going to be Lou Piniella 2.0. On the other hand, they can't go with a mild-mannered retread like Scioscia or Ron Washington. With Bryant entering arb 3, Schwarber going into arb 2, Zobrist likely to retire, Strop, Cishek, Castellanos and Hamels going into free agency, the team is going to have a lot of complicated decisions to make.

Hottovy seemingly has only had consistent luck with Darvish (and just in the second half). The rest of the staff have been uneven at best. I'd give Darvish at least half the credit for his resurgence because he was willing to adapt and learn new pitches (10 I believe?).

I could see trying to keep Cishek & Castellanos. Strop has been as bad as I've ever sen him this year and Hamels is burnt out. How many more years do we have Lester, 'cause unless he starts adapting his game, he isn't going to be worth much.

Lester's a free agent after 2021, at which point he'll be 38 and I have to imagine he'll call it quits.

I don't want the Cubs dumping money on Castellanos. Yeah, he's been hitting out of his mind (OPS+ of 150 or so) ever since they acquired him, but he's coasting on a completely unsustainable .347 BABIP. In his career, he's been a strictly middle-of-the-range hitter and he's a butcher defensively. Not the guy to invest in when you have Baez and Bote capable of carrying the middle infield.
