Is it at all possible she's Amy Pond? The one from the future in "The Girl Who Waited" ?

We never really see what happens to her beyond Eleven, (Young) Amy, and Rory basically leaving her behind at the mercy of the Handbots, and then there's this little tidbit:

The only thing that doesn't track would be that Amy and Clara never met. However, if Missy has been collecting dead people from along the Doctor's adventures, it's entirely reasonable that she could have learned about Clara and how Clara fit into the Doctor's life (vis-à-vis "The Impossible Girl" stuff) and used that against the Doctor.

Or, it could just be that the production chose to use that same location again and that they felt it had been long enough since "The Girl Who Waited" to use it (the way Star Trek always goes to Vasquez Rocks or Bronson Canyon and uses them as different locales. Still, it's interesting to me that they didn't just use the same location but they also reused that same perspective so pointedly.)

I guess we'll find out on Saturday!

She's done the place up a bit.

I don't like it.

That location has been used many times in Doctor Who, Torchwood and SJA. If we're going to make suggestions based on re-used locations, than Missy being River probably makes the most sense, since they used that location for the digital world in the Library story and we could easily say that River is somehow downloading dead people in there and calling it "Heaven."

Actually, that's not a bad idea...

I think if it was Romana or the Rani, I think most of the audience would go "WHO?!"

Neither have appeared, neither have even been mentioned. A reveal like that would fall flat on most of the current viewing audience.

It's either the Master or some version of Clara, is my bet.

The Master had to be introduced again in nuWho. I'm sure if its Romana or the Rani, Moffat can certainly do a similar re-introduction. While I don't think its either of them, the reason that they're "unknown" to the newer audience does not mean they cannot be Missy.

Considering how many reference type things have been going into the Capaldi episodes, especially towards the Fourth Doctor, I wouldn't put Romana out of the picture at all.

Though if the place Missy runs is for the dead...what if Adric's there?

That's true. Just how many of modern Who's target audience (meaning people who only started watching with Eccleston and had no knowledge of Classic Who) understood the significance to Derek Jacobi stating "I am the Master" in Utopia?

Anyhow, given that Clara didn't recognise Missy, it appears that she's not:
  • the woman in the shop who first gave Clara the Doctor's phone number or
  • headmistress of Coal Hill School.

Why would Clara remember what a woman in a shop she met years ago looks like?

I quite distinctly remember Clara phoned a woman in the shop. Clara never actually met the woman in the shop.

Edit: Nevermind, scratch that. I got it wrong, as usual.

There's a simple explanation for Clara not recognizing her.

She did something her previous selves have done on several occasions. She wore a disguise.

Can everyone here clearly remember every person they've ever met once in a shop? I'm guessing Missy wasn't rocking her Victorian Mary Poppins look back then either!

So, outside of the tiny insular world of assorted Doctor Who Message Boards this change seems to have been accepted without any fuss or moaning by the world at large. Hell, even the Mail and Express who can usually be counted on for a good anti-PC rant have had nothing to say on the subject.

Thinking about it though, it is a bit depressing that (some) Doctor Who fans turn out to be less tolerant and open to change than everyone else.

Actually, I've been quite impressed. Sure there is anti-female Doctor opinion expressed by quite a few here, and there was some rolling of the eyes when the rumor/guesses began about MISI, but, I don't remember a single post here complaining about MISI's reveal, if there have been any, it's not more than a couple, and even some of the previously more vehemently opposed have posted they had no problem with the reveal.

Oh to be sure, this place has been a bastion of sanity compared to others you can look at (if you dare).

That's certainly true. I have an account on Gallifrey Base I use strictly for lurking purposes (you have to be registered to see anything on that forum) and the negative reaction over there is...strong, to say the least.
