Mission Gamma

I believe that Grand Admiral Thrawn was the main antagonist in Timothy Zahn's Star Wars: Heir to the Empire trilogy, which was pretty much the beginning of the modern "Expanded Universe" of SW tie-in literature (as well as coining the name Coruscant for the Imperial capital, which was later adopted by the movies).

I don't watch Castle, but it did seem like a modern day Murder She Wrote.... And I liked the Angela Lansbury's series back in day.

Anyhow, I have to say, I am soooooooooooooooooooo happy to get Mission Gamma behind me. This 4-parter was a mixed read for me to be sure. The DS9 issues before it were great. I just don't know why I felt the series stalled a bit with MG..... maybe its just me. I liked the last one the best for the most part. Its not without criticisms on pacing in the end, but it was a realky fun and entertaining read. The other 3 were ok with me personally finding the DS9/bajor stuff way more interesting than the Gamma Quadrant stuff. And even in Lesser Evil, the Gamma Quadrant focus was on....
the Borg... sorta
....and, as I recall, that person/people/whathaveyou are not from the Gamma Quadrant in the first place

Aside from the basic premise of "mystery writer solves real homicides," the two shows are essentially nothing alike. While Jessica Fletcher was always smarter than whatever inept police officers she interacted with, Richard Castle and Detective Kate Beckett are full and equal partners in crimesolving. In fact, I've often wondered why the show isn't called Castle and Beckett. Also, Jessica just happened to stumble into homicides everywhere she went (you'd think people would've eventually stopped inviting her places), but Castle follows Beckett on homicide cases that she's assigned to as a detective. Plus there's the whole Moonlighting-esque romantic-tension-with-witty-banter stuff, though not as broad as Moonlighting was. And the show's trademark is insanely byzantine, convoluted mysteries with constant twists and turns, kinda like a murder-mystery equivalent of the medical mysteries on House.

The other thing the two shows have in common is the real-world publication of tie-in books that are purportedly by the shows' main characters, but the two "Richard Castle" books published so far have actually been incorporated into the show as plot points. I'm not sure any of the books that Jessica allegedly wrote in the show were ever published "for real."

They're not from the Alpha Quadrant either, but that didn't stop them showing up here. They get around.

Not only a Star Wars name, but a Firefly avatar! I wonder sometimes why they don't ban me.

because I didn't recognise either references? :)

I got the avatar, but I have no idea Thrawn is...

Other way round for me. I know Thrawn, and it was bugging me that Thrawn's avatar is clearly not the man (Chiss) in question. I've never seen Firefly, so I had no idea who it was...

Oh good! I was worried he was from the old movies and I'd missed him entirely!

And, what`s wrong with Castle? ;)
Where to begin?
[/BECKETT]

NOOOO!! I wanna try that show, don't discourage me! :p

On topic... I see my MG books... I should reread...

I never looked at the MG interlocking covers until now. The image at Memory Beta is ok, but this is not the best intrelocking cast cover or general cover from ST. Terok Nor is probably a bit better interlocking cover, no? And, perhaps, the NF Prometheans combined cover (Martyr + Fire On High covers) is a lightly better cast cover?

I think Crucible probably is the best of those covers. I would love to have a high-res version for wallpaper

Crucible and Terok Nor are my favorites. While it is cool getting to see images of the characters on the two NF covers and the Mission Gamma covers, artistically they're really not that interesting IMO.

It's been a while since I read the Mission: Gamma novels, but I have to say that I really enjoyed them, and absolutely loved the idea of the Defiant - despite its small size - being used as an exploratory vessel. I also really enjoyed the way that the books were paced.

Regarding the Mission Gamma/Rising Son reading order, I know that the official DS9 Relaunch order has M:G listed first, but I actually read Rising Son first, and rather prefer it that way.
