Mission Gamma

The German editions of the first two Mission Gamma novels cost about 10 % more than regular novels. And Crucible: McCoy will cost almost 1/3 more.

Also, I was chuckling when I saw that the price for the 400 page Cathedral (Gamma 3) was the same price as the 266 page Lesser Evil (Gamma 4).

Marco once intimated that he sold his soul to the devil to get the finance people to keep the cover price of those first three MG novels to the RRP of regular MMPB ST novels. We got a real bargain with MG.

Good deal for the readers who bought them at the time. Interesting prices on Amazon for Mission Gamma.

Just finished Lesser Evil. I understand why folks thought it was fast. The first half was amazing and then right after the Vaughn flashback, everything sped up.

Ruriko's coming awake and Vaughn's quick resolution to that plot.

The Gryphon's XO turn. The whole Gryphon thing could have benefited from a few more pages.

Not enough Ro or Taran'atar.

I did like the end with Jake and Opaka.

So, now, I'll start Rising Son. Is it all flashback from after Jake took the shuttle craft in the wormhole or is it a mix of flashback and modern day? Does Rising Soon advance some of the non-Jake/Sisko stuff DS9 subplots? Or is just Jake with the other DS9 subplot stuff with Vaughn, Kira, Ro, etc. in Unity?

I may actually take a break from DS9 after Unity (after I get through Rising Son naturally) and go to ATFW,ATFP and get up to Destiny with the books I already have. Or would folks suggest I continue through to end of The Worlds of DS9 prior to the MU plot starting around Warpath (I think)? I'm loving reading this DS9 stuff, but I want to get caught up so I can have some more "current" discussions around here too. :)

And, I've been around here long enough to get an Avatar! :bolian: I was debating between the Avatar covers and the House of Cards New Frontier cover, but I went with DS9. :D

^ Unity is a good place to stop. All you want from DS9 before you get to Destiny is the stuff you've had already about Ezri switching to command and liking it.

I'm not sure "flashback" is the right word for it. It could be considered that relative to the other books, in that Lesser Evil ended with Jake's return and Rising Son then goes back and tells the whole story from right after Avatar up until just before that point. But as far as its own internal structure is concerned, it's a linear narrative moving forward in time over the course of five months and a week, paralleling the events of the previous six books and one novella.

It follows up on some threads that were dormant since the first season of DS9, and it sets some things in motion that continue in Unity and beyond.

The end of WoDS9 Vol. 3 leads directly and immediately into Warpath. It's not a good place to break. After Unity would probably be the best point to take a breather.

Thanks Thrawn & Christopher.

I'll be reading Rising Son and Unity. Then ATFW/ATFP, Articles of the Federation, Q&A, Before Dishonour, Sum of All Fears, and Destiny 1-3. Then back to DS9 and then to post-Destiny + my 2 DS9'ish TP books.

NF: Blind Man's Bluff and DTI will stores during this time, or at least one will depending on how quick I read, and I'll immediately read them. :)

BTW, Thrawn, couldn't you have picked a Star Trek name around here rather than a Star Wars one? Traitor. ;)

Not only a Star Wars name, but a Firefly avatar! I wonder sometimes why they don't ban me.

^ Are you serious right now? Firefly is essential. ESSENTIAL. Go buy it.

Did you really ask a sci-fi fan whether he knows what Firefly is? I guess I should put this ``:p ``in front of any joke I make here?

And, what`s wrong with Castle? ;)

^ Sorry. Sarcasm is hard to detect over the internet sometimes. I was genuinely shocked.

And nothing's wrong with Castle; my avatar just happens to be from the Serenity movie poster.

I think you meant Greater Than the Sum, Sum of All Fears is a Tom Clancy novel.

Oh, and I love Castle, Star Wars, and Firefly.:shrug:

No worries. You're easy to tease :bolian: it seems, but yeah... tone / intent difficult tell with posts for sure.

BTW, do you read the SW lit? I noted earlier that I don't read a lot, but I, Jedi is a big fave of mine.

And, in terms of Mission Gamma..... after almost a decade I am done reading the 4-parter. Do I get a prize now or something?

^ I did read Star Wars lit, until Legacy Of The Force turned me off of it. I read every damn book until Inferno, and was sufficiently pissed off to stop completely.

I, Jedi was indeed awesome. As you may imagine, my favorites were Zahn's :)

I really like the mix of aliens in the Mission Gamma tetralogy. The mission was a to seek out new life and new civilizations and I think we got a broad array of alien life that was more realistic than humanoid after humanoid. It's one of the things I go to the novels for, to show what the shows would could they afford to do so. There's a danger a writer being let loose to create, they may they lose the tone or spirit of the show, or that sense of verisimilitude, or that they may come up with some dubious ideas. Still, when it works, it's special. It's the triumph of the echo over the voice, as Shinzon would put it. You don't feel like you're reading a consolation for there not being more show (as some books can feel) but that the show's but one iteration of the universe you're experiencing in your hands.

because I didn't recognise either references? :)

I got the avatar, but I have no idea Thrawn is...

My overall impression of the series was positive. Instead of letting myself get bogged down when things drag a bit, I tend to read a bit faster, skim a bit, so I don't directly miss anything but-- if something interesting happens a bit later that's related to the dragging part, I can go back to the slower parts with renewed interest.

I wish the last part had been a bit longer... that was quite neat!
