Mystery solved.

Somebody found it in an abandoned storage unit they bought (inside unseen, I guess) and put it up for sale on eBay, but apparently they were contacted and told it might be stolen. The ad was later taken down.

Gary Kerr. This isn't like the "reunited" phaser, this is the real deal. paint flaws, wood grain on the base, dent behind the deflector, it's correctly missing the shuttlebay doors (as shown in Methuselah).

Here's hoping the Air & Space Museum can get their hands on it, restore it, and put it on display alongside the 12-footer.

This is fantastic news. Also hoping that it gets into a museum. But it sounds like there could be a long legal debate about who owns it, whether it was ever officially reported as stolen, whether the storage unit it was found in was actually abandoned and properly auctioned off, and so forth.

There are about four threads actively talking about it. I think the Mods will have to make an executive decision about which forum wins the canonical discussion. I know there's a "ships" thread for each new season in that show's forum and in Trek Tech, but in this case, I don't think there's quite enough variations in perspective and emphasis to justify multiple parallel discussions.

I should clarify that there hasn't been an official authentication. Kerr just said that what he has seen so far looks correct, and if it was a fake it would have to be one of the best ever done.
