Missed Opportunity in First Contact

I think a missed opportunity was not having Sisko being captain of the Defiant. Imagine Picard and Sisko butting heads over Picard's handling of the Enterprise's assimilation. Imagine if it was Sisko trying to talk Picard into blowing up his ship to destroy the Borg.

I for one am glad that Sisko was no where near First Contact. I like Sisko, I like Picard, but their scenes in Emissary are perfect and especially their reconciliation. I think Sisko joining Picard in the past would have lessened those scenes in Emissary.

While having DS9's Sisko would have been a great crossover, having two captains on board would have overpowered the film...not to mention in the end it's Picard's ship, and he has seniority. Supposedly however a Sisko ordering Worf scene was filmed; I'm glad it was cut as it hurts the pacing.

But I like Terry Farrell's suggestion that she could've been at the Defiant's helm.

And speaking of Lily and Picard, I think that it was still more powerful to have them fight it out verbally than Crusher vs. Picard (shades of the Pasteur argument in AGT---good for that ep; in FC they needed an outsider to yell at Picard). However it was a missed opportunity to not use Crusher more somehow.

Also as mentioned in another thread, the line "I never read it" by Lily supposedly implies lesser traditional Western education on Lily's part, allowing Picard to play the more 'civilized' angle. Maybe if Lily had read Moby Dick, and they could have continued the discussion similarly, even explaining Moby Dick to the audience despite both having read it. Maybe Lily could have read it..."a long time ago"...

Which brings me to good opportunities in FC. The way they explained things in techno/lay terms was quite skillful ("temporal vortex"/"time travel" etc.) helped the pacing IMO.

I would picture such a confrontation happening on the bridge...
Sisko (after Picard's ordered Worf off the bridge): No, Mr. Worf, you're staying...
Picard: How dare you...
Sisko (the Sisko death look in his eyes): How dare I what, Picard? You're going to get us all killed or assimilated! We've lost the Enterprise!
Picard: We haven't lost the Enterprise, Captain Sisko. And we won't...
(Shouting match ensues, leading to the next line...)
Sisko: You want us to stay here and get us assimilated, don't you, Locutus?!

I never thought of having Sisko there...but that would have rocked and added a whole new dimension of conflict.

I also take issue with Starfleet's stupidity. Leave the Enterprise out of the fight because they're not sure that Picard can handle confronting the Borg?

Fine. Relieve Picard, put Riker in command (since he's the guy who actually kicked the Borg's ass the first time) and send the Enterprise into battle.

Then, during the battle, have Picard hear the Borg voices and tell Riker what to aim for. Cube blows up and Riker gives Picard the Captain's chair with a grin. Add a little bit of drama there as we see Riker hesitate to follow Picard's suggestion, but Picard says softly, "Trust me, Will." :)

Don't EVEN get me started on Nemesis...

I'd argue that since practically the entire audience was guaranteed to be used to hearing "Star Trek" in that context, there was no way for that line not to sound forced-- and that's why it wasn't a good line to include in the movie.

It didn't sound forced to me at all. I liked it.

Imagine Sisko in a satin dress during the Dixon Hill sequence.

What, you don't want to imagine it? Well, I'll jsut zipper my pants and go imagine it elsewhere!

Sisko: Watch your caboose, Dix!

Brooks can pull it off. Have you seen that blooper with de Lancie?

Sisko: Bring them back, Q!
Q: Or what, you'll ravish me? "Ravish," that's supposed to be "ravage..."
Sisko: *seductively* I might.

One missed opportunity:
Data encounters the Borg Queen and then has memory flashes of the time he was connected to Locutus, the scene shows her learning of him.

It should have been the DS9 crew instead of TNG's. That is a missed opportunity.

Imagine Ben Sisko, and Lily Sloan's chats.

 Thanks for the reminder.

Wasn't he already dating Kassidy Yates?
I don't think he'd be stubborn, though...

I really liked this movie but I did feel puting Worf onboard was a bit forced, especially when no other recognizable DS9 crew member was ever seen. It would've made a lot more sense if Sisko was in command and beamed over to the E-E, maybe even with Worf. The writers really didn't develop Lily enough for her to be considered a love interest so replacing her character with Sisko's could've been doable and maybe a lot better. Nothing against Alfre; it's just that JLP and Sisko have history, which sets up the conflict near the end so much better. It might've worked very well.

^ Not to mention both men have a personal history and grudge with the Borg. Which would make it an even more interesting battle if when Picard goes apeshit on the Borg, it's Sisko that has to remind him of his duty and talk him out of losing his ship and crew.

Hmmm...I would have enjoyed Sisko early in the film, as a cameo. An angry cameo.

Oh, well. The film is fine as it is, and it opened up many new doors in the Trekverse...

None of those doors lead to "good Trek" did it :p
