Contest: ENTER Misc Avatar Contest: Look Up, WAAYYY Up...

Welcome to the new Misc Avatar Contest! Our theme for this contest is things you can see in the sky. The subject can be artificial or natural, and can be something seen in either the day or night sky. Basically, anything you like that can be seen while looking up when outdoors somewhere in the world! :)

Your subject doesn't need to be something that is in the sky all the time. For example, birds are OK, even though they are not constantly in flight. Please note, your image doesn't have to be from the perspective of someone on the ground. We probably don't need images of tiny specks! ;)

Usual Misc avatar contest rules apply: no media images, and maximum size should be 200 x 200 pixels and 1 MB. The contest will be open for about a week.

To start us off, here's my entry, the aurora borealis:

Good luck... and keep watching the skies! :techman:

I took this one early evening in June of 2016 near Cincinnati, where we were living at the time. No special camera, just an average cell phone. Except for resizing the image, what you see is exactly as it was. The line is the electric or phone cable between poles.

To me, the cloud looks like a Native American with angel wings. :)

oops! I completely overlooked this one!
Here's one of my oldest avatars. Members of KHCMB and Slipstream might remember it :)

Hmm, that's a very nice av, but it's also almost identical to one entered a week ago. I don't think I've ever encountered this situation outside a media-based contest, but just at first blush, it doesn't strike me as particularly fair to the original entry to allow another entry so similar.

Do we have any type of precedent for this kind of situation? Comments welcome.

They differ in:

size
orientation
speed
resolution
one disappears completely, while the other is shadowed

Sort of like comparing an orange and a tangerine.

Personally, I don't see a problem.

It's your contest, your choice, but I would not allow it, they are very similar and one could even say it's lazy in entering it.

Yeah, I wouldn't allow it if I were running a contest. If you need suggestions, perhaps the ISS (Yes, you can see it if you know where to look via predictions), meteors (Perseids are coming up soon), a UFO (As some would attest to seeing ;))

I'm sorry. I didn't see last week's contest and just used my old avatar from 2001. But I most certainly withdraw it under these circumstances! Whoever came first came first and there's no when and if.

If you are ok with keeping the contest open another 4 hours I'll enter a different one as soon as I'm home from work (here at work the stupid firewall blocks all locations I could load the pic up to).

The entry @Avro Arrow is referring to is in this very thread and entered last week, not in the last contest.

Thanks for waiting. Here's my entry (don't laugh, Kai - I bet you are a fan, too :D :p)

My apologies, {{{{{{{auntie}}}}}}} and {{{{{{{avro}}}}}}}! My browser was slow yesterday when I posted my old avatar so that it displayed auntie's entry as a static pic. I didn't realize it was an animated one until just now. That's why I thought avro was referring to a contest I presumed I had missed. Without question mine was practically an identical twin of auntie's entry.

My new entry is Maus, a celebrity in Germany who has her own TV show for almost 50 years now. Generations of Germans have grown up with her (and still watch the show every Sunday morning :D) It's her 2nd trip on the ISS with Mr. Gerst and this time she got her own space suit, complete with ESA logo =)

'barb, thanks so much for posting this! My wife and I never happened to hear about Maus. We are overjoyed that there is a fuzzler (our word for stuffed animals) up on the ISS! We collect and restore them (dolls, too) and this really made our day! On behalf of Mr Foggy Trunk, Mr Shagberry, Slippery Jim DiGrizz, and all of our other friends, a really big Thank You! :techman:

You're welcome and please give your fuzzlers a greeting from Eisbär the polar bear, Krtek the mole, Rudi raven and Ernie & Bert, two Ikea rats. :techman: You might enjoy following the adventures of our gentle friend Monkey at http://himonkey.org/
There are actually two fuzzlers on the ISS right now: Maus has a little compagnion, a tiny blue elephant:

While there have been several mice in orbit already, this is the first elephant ever in space.
