Contest: ENTER Misc Avatar Contest: Classic Cars

Miss Lemon

My apologies for the delay, it has been too hot to think these past couple of days. :ack:

When I was searching for images of Roger Moore for the avatar contest in TV & Media, my eye got caught by the beautiful Volvo P1800 coupe he drove in The Saint.

So this week's contest is all about classic cars! I'd love to hear if you drive an vintage car yourself or if you would like to.

The usual rules apply: image should be a maximum size of 200 x 200 pixels, and 1 MB. No media images please. Contest will be open for entries for about a week.

I don't even a driver's licence, so no, I don't drive an oldtimer myself. I've no ambition to get a licence or a car, but classic cars have a great visual style to them.

So just to check, from the context (and Kai's entry) this is all about old cars and vehicles, right? (Sorry, I've only ever heard the phrase "oldtimers" in relation to people, so that's what I was expecting when I opened the thread! :) )

That's too funny!

I actually did perform a quick search to check if English websites use this word. I guess I should have used Cambridge dictionary. :alienblush:

^ Thank you to you both! I suppose it's possible people use it in that context here, too; I just haven't heard it personally.

I am not a "car person" by any stretch of the imagination*. However, my dad used to restore and race vintage cars in his youth. I don't have a photo of his car specifically, but he did use to own one of these:

* True story: my mother can identify the make and model of a car just by seeing it drive by on the street... an ability which boggles my mind. However, I was once trying to explain to her the difference between the 1701-refit from the films, and the 1701-D from TNG, which in my mind look vastly more different from each other than any two given cars. My verbal descriptions didn't help, so I actually found pictures of each of them so I could show them to her side-by-side. Her response: "But they look the same."!:lol:

^^ My Brother used to be able to do that car identification thing when he was a kid. He would do bizarre stuff like describe the hubcaps of various cars from memory.

Let's see. I drive a 1995 Grand Maquis. Is that considered an oldtimer yet? :rommie:

My Uncle has a 1955 Chevy that's currently being renovated. I've got a bunch of pictures of that that I can dig out of my archives.

Well, I don't have as many pictures of the old Chevy as I thought, but here we go:

Pre-renovation, obviously. :rommie:

Almost six days and only four entries? Come on, people! There must be at least a few of you classic car buffs out there.

So just to check, from the context (and Kai's entry) this is all about old cars and vehicles, right? (Sorry, I've only ever heard the phrase "oldtimers" in relation to people, so that's what I was expecting when I opened the thread! :) )
That's what I thought too -- I thought the contest would be about old actors and celebrities!

Maybe it would help if a mod could change the thread title to "Old-Time Cars"?

^ Maybe we could also allow multiple entries this time...?

It took me some time to dig through my old pictures. I don't own a classic car myself, but regularly go to music festivals where visitors who bring their classic car get in for free.

This picture I took at a festival in Turnhout, Belgium:

I don't know the specs, except that it's an Opel. I mostly liked the colour and chrome details. :D

I'll keep this contest open for entries until Monday. I might be able to take a few nice pictures of classic cars over the weekend.

We seem to be having trouble getting participation in the Avatar Contest lately. I don't know why.

Well, if you decide to go this way, you can use this one as my second entry! :) As I said, I'm not a car person, but the beauty of the internet is that I can just Google and pick something that looks interesting! ;)

According to Wikipedia, this particular car in the image is considered the most valuable car in the world... in 2005, its insured value was $35 million!

(Oh, and I have another one ready to go if you decide to go with more than two each... ;) )

Didn't notice this until today, otherwise I would have entered much sooner.

So, before my parents had kids, they had a Lotus Europa. They had to sell it once they needed more of a family car. But it was red just like this one. And what's a car thread without a red car, right? :D
