Mirror says New Console Room for Smith

Nothing dates quicker than hi-tech, so I'd be amazed if they went in that direction.

This is all too true. I also think that's the reason why the coral theme is so appealing to everybody. It's clearly high-tech but it has a sense of other-ness about it that won't go away when we all have those freaky hydraulic tubes in our living rooms.

I just keep hoping that, with Smith's Doctor persona, and now with a new Tardis interior look, they don't go that doomed route of, "Let's shake things up! Let's make this look not like Doctor Who! Let's try and attract the audience that doesn't watch the show!"
New interior = cool.
"Let's be so different that it is a different show" = not cool.

I don't think there's really a need to attract a bigger audience, is there? The version they have already appears to be a pretty big hit.
Yeah, it's a hit, but I believe RTD has said he thinks it's a shame more teenagers don't watch the show, because they don't think it's cool.

Yeah but the 8-12 year olds now watching will grow up with the show, so I imagine you will get the teenagers eventually :)

Re Smith's look, I imagine they'll want to give his Doctor a look that doesn't mirror how he dresses in real life, so we might end up with the ridiculous situation whereby his doctor outfit is less extreme than his civillian one

also they are going to get there first chance to say things like "without RTD, David Tennant and the S1 console room its just not Doctor Who, I will no longer watch" like all Doctor Who fans they will continue to watch but after the episode has aired review the episode by saying how Ten would have done it better, and how RTDs would never have wrote such a stupid story, and how much there hate of the new console room is distracting them from the massive Dalek attack.

as for Matt Smiths outfit, maybe they will have to bring the 6th Doctors outfit out of retirement for him.

Personally, I think the Tardis will be captured by these hostile aliens. No Tardis to go in to, they can recreate the set for Smith's Doctor, he can just walk in for the first time and find everything has changed. Shocker.

On Smith's look, I think you need to remember that from now until he becomes the Doctor, every half bit news paper in England are going to be trying to take a photograph of him, and be like "This could be his outfit!!", if I were Matt I wouldn't dress anything like what I think the Doctor would look like, and throw people off :).

:wtf: Don't even joke!
you want to find an outfit more bizzare than what Smith currently wears?

excsue whilst I go off on this

Doctor: finally I have found my TARDIS
Companion: ive been looking forward to this
Doctor: as have I my dear companion, as have I

the Doctor opens the door works in, walks around, and falls to his knees: NOOOO!!!!

Companion: whats the matter Doctor?
Doctor: they changed the desktop settings.
Companion: that and its bigger on the inside
Doctor: oh its always like that
Comapnion: life with you just keeps getting stranger & stranger

Probably something like that.

I always thought because the Tardis is linked to the Doctor, then when he regenerates the Tardis has the same capability. I always found that idea fun, a phone box that regenerates before death.

I never thought the new Tardis wasn't like that, they just didn't show it and the door was on one of the "invisible" walls we can't see on TV. It would be nice to see an actual door again though.

We've seen another room in the first Christmas special, unfortunately it was just a redress of the console room, and thankfully had the complexity of the TARDIS mentioned when Nine gave Rose directions to get changed. Though I'm in the camp that gets a little annoyed by there being no other door. It just makes it seem so small :(

My first assumption was that they'd just spice up the current set to keep some continuity, but I'd love something new. I was a big fan of the Eight's console room, though not many agree

I've never studied the current room that closely, but I was under the impression there WERE some doorways or openings towards the back somewhere. The room is so huge, and there are so many shadows and nooks and crannies everywhere, that I just figured there had to be.

Well, we have seen instances where he lifts the grating to access controls, wiring, and connectors for different purposes. Not to mention when he turned into #10 he ventured into that humongous closet to find his current wardrobe.

I don't know if this story is true, but if it is, I'm fine with a new console room. I never really got attached to the old one, too dark and gloomy. It was OK but not one that I was super fond of. Hopefully the new one feels more comfortable. It felt like you couldn't relax in the old one.

hum... this sounds familar, I think it went something like...

I remember watching Logopolis and the doctor inputting the dimensions of the tardis on some really ancient computer

Someone more computer savvy might know what computer that was at the time of filming

BBC Micro, probably.

January 1981's a bit early for the BBC Micro (wikipedia says the first ones went on sale in late 1981, so maybe the Doctor Who team could have got a prototype at teh start of the year).
But given that all the computer hardware at the Pharos project and the Logopolitan copy of it looks like a 380Z, I'd guess the graphics possibly came from one of those. They look about right, but we never had a colour monitor for the one in the school computer room...

Weren't the TARDIS schematics in Logopolis displayed on the scanner? The BBC Micro didn't become part of the console until the The Five Doctors rebuild.

Well I'm glad they're changing the console room. Don't hate the current one...just ready for a change. Count me in as someone who really liked the console room no. 8 had. Plus, I'd like them to do just one "bottle" ep. aboard the Tardis so that we could see a little bit more of the place.

It kills me that on Hartnell's Who, you actually got to see where they slept, but we haven't seen anything like that on NuWho.

Along with it's time and space ability, it's ability to have loads of places in it also makes it remarkable. And we should see that.

Yeah I have to agree. As cool as the current one would be to visit and explore, it doesn't seem like the kind of comfy place you would want to travel around in for months at a time.

I think the producers might have made it just a little TOO alien or something.

One of RTD's rules for the series was that the Doctor and his Companion couldn't be shown sleeping or eating in the TARDIS. They do those things in the places they visit instead.

I hope not. Among the lowest points in the original series were all those interminable TARDIS scenes towars the end of Baker I's time and especially into Davison's time.

I dunno, whilst I wouldn't want 30 minutes of loading dock padding ala Invasion of Time, it would be nice, on occasion, to see a few other bits of the TARDIS. You probably could pull off a complete bottle show set only in the TARDIS, but I'd want them to have several more sets by then, and it'd really only work as a one off, or an ep every few seasons.
