"Mirror, Mirror" Question

Since the TOS method of getting to the Mirror Universe was a storm that interfered with the transporter, I'm going to suggest that only organic material got transferred. Since I doubt that Starfleet uniforms and equipment are made of stuff like cotton, wool, silk, etc. that's why the crew ended up in each others' clothes and carrying each others' equipment.

it isnt just the halkans.
mu spock while not the same had more scruples then most of his mu counterparts.

Hmmm, speaking of mirrors...

Mirror Image”The Twilight Zone episode

Paul follows her in and agrees to wait for the 7:30 bus. While they wait, Millicent, lying on the bench wrapped in a blanket, insists the strange events are caused by an evil double from a parallel world; a nearby, yet distant alternate plane of existence that comes into convergence with this world by powerful forces, or unnatural, unknown events. When this happens, the malevolent impostors enter this realm. Millicent's doppelgänger, evil in nature, can survive in this world only by eliminating and replacing its good counterpart - Millicent herself. The real Millicent is seemingly correct in her postulations, but no one will believe her.

It is not an "Evil Universe", but rather a universe in which the Federation is evil.
Since the alternate universe is intended to give us a mirror image of the Federation, I have always gathered that the intention was to let us see the Federation and Star Fleet from the Malkans' point of view, whether or not that view was accurate. When Kirk et al choose to ignore the Prime Directive, aren't they more or less living up to the "evil empire" image?

I don't believe the Prime Directive prohibits the Federation from diplomatic relations with other cultures. "A Taste of Armageddon", "Metamorphosis", "The Gamesters of Triskelion", "A Piece of the Action", "By Any Other Name", "Return to Tomorrow", "Spectre of the Gun", and "Elaan of Troyius" all show the Federation willing to pursue diplomatic relations with alien societies, even revealing that the PD can be overridden on occasion.

If Q were around in the TOS era, this would be the type of tomfoolery he'd pull.

I mean, how did the crews' consciousness(?) or souls(??) swap during the transporter goof? That's some magnetic storm.

If I were to apply the appropriate technobabble to this question, I would say that the crews' consciousnesses exist as energy on a particular frequency, and these bits of energy got mixed up and swapped between universes during the storm.

That would also explain why they didn't take their uniforms with them. ;)

Huh? I always understood that their whole bodies were switched. I mean, there's nothing in the episode which really indicates it could not have been just their consciousness, but that would contradict the way in which we normally see the transporter work. It always transports the whole body, not just a part of it.

It's just another speculation on my part. Earlier in this thread I suggested that maybe it was just their bodies that got switched because only organic substances could be switched -- if the uniforms were made of synthetic materials, they would not be switched.

I really don't have a preference for one idea over another, but I'll gladly accept whatever theory anybody comes up with that makes the best scientific sense (in terms of RL science, not technobabble).

I always thought it was just their consciousness that was switched. If Sulu had been in the landing party, would he all of a sudden have that big scar?

That's actually a good point. I also didn't thought of the clothes thing. Maybe you are right and it's just their consciousness that's switched. It's just that I never looked at it that way. To be honest, I never really thought about it that much.

Simple response to topic question. The Halkans and I assume other parts of the Universe, were a constant. Only the variables were mirrored. So we must believe that the Enterprise and its crew, as well as it's Federation are always variable. Hence "Enemy Within" et al. If you see duality, you have a variable.

I do have a follow up question. In the Mirror Universe, why wasn't it mirrors who saw their reflections in lovers' eyes. For that matter, wshat aboujt two-way mirrors? Would the doctors be secretly viewed by the patients? And also, why the hell didn't Sulu phaser Uhura when she twisted his diddle?
