Miri's planet afterwards

Melakon

Admiral
In Memoriam
I originally saw this during first run in 1966. In all this time since, there's one point I never stopped to consider.

After the serum is discovered, the crew restored, and medical teams and social workers are left with the children, what happens next?

The prolonged aging agent must still be in the atmosphere, and anyone visiting the planet would need to be vaccinated for protection. Would Starfleet quarantine the planet? Would the Federation use it as a health club? Would the atmosphere be restored to pre-toxin conditions?

And what about these 300 year old children? Will they live a thousand years or more? Would their own children be another generation of Methuselahs? Will they stay on their world, or eventually establish new colonies?

There seem to be many ways things could develop.

I say we put 'em with the Ba'ku and see what happens!

Send the kids to live with Flint. He he he.

Assume that being "cured" of the effects of the virus would restore normal aging and lifespan to Miri and the rest of the kids.

Since Kirk mentions that the Federation will send advisors to the planet (truant officers, teachers, etc.) to help establish/restore order, it would almost seem to mirror the early Vulcan/Earth relationship that we see in ENT (and which started in First Contact). This time the greatly advanced Federation is getting the society on the devastated "Earth II" up and running and fit for Federation membership.

I think tnere was a novel that had that as a backstory

There was also a novel which had the Miri Earth pulled back into its home parallel.universe

Arrested Development is all that these 3 Century Old kids have to look forward to. Beyond justifying the Social Worker's jobs, of what use could they be to the Federation? Perhaps, as a laboratory for Social Scientists, they might prove to have some value ...

A recent novel by one of our own did some speculation on that planet---There is a part of me that likes to think of it as Terra on TOS BSG, and the wrecked Earth on NuBSG after the radiation died down.

Decades long puberty, indefinite teenage angst, a major new movie industry servicing the mass desire for miserable adolescent vampires...
