Minecraft

Underground houses/fortresses of DOOM are my favorite. I love it when I find lava naturally flowing out of a hole in the side of a cliff, it looks so AWESOME to build a fortress around. And now that we have pistons, I might finally be able to create a door hidden behind lava! :D

Built a temple (loosely based off the Mormon Temple in Logan Utah. But what is really awesome is on the second floor, I built a playable keyboard.

That right, a keyboard.

Notch released another 1.8 screenshot, this time showing a "stronghold" (which seems to be a massive dungeon complex) with a ravine running through it. He hasn't explained what the grey reed-like thing on the right is, but I'm guessing that it's barbed-wire.

I hope that new brick block can be manufactured using smooth stone and isn't a unique item that you can only find in strongholds, like mossy cobblestone. It would be a good new building material so long as it's not in limited supply.

Didn't Notch at one time say mossy cobble would be made to spread or something? I always thought that would be cool. You would need a way to scrape the moss off, though, if you just want regular cobble from it. Shovel or something?

Looks awesome. The ravines look like we'll need to bring material with us at all times when exploring in order to get across some of them.

It seems that the Adventure Update isn't going to be released until late August/early September. :( Damn lazy Swedes, if they didn't eat, sleep or take bathroom breaks, we'd probably get it by the end of next week, but Notch refuses to do that.

I'd love to think it's being held off that long so it can be thoroughly tested and nicely polished for its release, but who am I kidding? Notch will take several vacations, add half-assed features (and then get bored with them before they're done), then release it abruptly with a brief announcement on Twitter, right before he goes on another two-week vacation with no Internet access.

Some of the details about 1.8 are trickling in.

  • Hunger. There's going to be a hunger bar.
  • EXP: An EXP bar as well, with things apparently becoming more difficult as you level up.
  • Permadeath. Wow, this is a big one. I'm really not keen on this, what with all the accidental deaths that can happen. Minecraft can be a very accident prone game, between falling down holes or ledges or getting blown up by creepers. I sure hope it can be toggled, especially on servers.

I hope all of those things can be toggled. But then again, I guess it all depends how they do it. Could be fun, could be disastrous.
