Martha. Do medical doctors not count in your eyes?

Edit: Just caught the Grace bit - apparently not.

They do research too, you know.
Yeah, I did think of Martha after I posted. That said, it's a shame that Martha really didn't do much doctor work after she joined The Doctor, although admittedly the same could be said about Mel. I just miss the days of Ian, Zoe, Nyssa, and others applying their scientific knowledge during their adventures.

Actually committing to realistically portraying a non-contemporary companion would be a lot of work, which is why televised Doctor Who has never really done it. They all became indistinguishable from contemporary teenagers pretty quickly.

I don't know of many teenagers who qualify as doctors and go on to become special operations operatives like Martha; or who struggle with finding a direction in life after being manipulated by their fiancé like Donna; or who are dealing with questions of who to marry, conceiving a child, and divorce like Amy and Rory; or coping with the loss of their mother by becoming a childcare worker until they figure out a direction in life and become a teacher, like Clara; or who work as police officers like Yaz.

Rose is the only one who behaved like a teenager in any sense, and even then she behaved like a teenager who was starting to carry the responsibilities of adulthood and was trying to figure herself out before meeting the Doctor.

For the most part, nuWho companions do not behave like teenagers. They behave like people in their early adulthood, because that is what they are.

Rose is the only modern companion who was a teenager, wasn't she? And even then, she was 19 in the first season (though Billie Piper was older).

Going through the other modern companions, Jack certainly wasn't a teenager. Mickey was five years older than Rose (per Father's Day) so certainly not a teenager. Pretty certain Martha was said to be in her twenties or so, and Donna definitely was not a teenager.

Amy and Rory were nineteen in The Eleventh Hour but were twenty-one in the rest of their first season. River's certainly not a teenager, Clara was said to be twenty-seven or so in Deep Breath. Bill was in her twenties, while Nardole was not a teenager.

Ryan and Yaz were 19 in their first season. Ryan explicitly said he was in his first season, while Yaz is implied to be given the two of the went to school together. Granted, that raises the issue of how many 19 year old police officers are there already working without supervision. Graham and Dan definitely were not teenagers.

Someone's getting ready for shooting to start next week. I wonder if we'll get some in costume photos this weekend to stay ahead of the tabloids?
