Middle school was, for me, a period of underwear upheaval. 3 years in a row I switched my underwear type. I stopped wearing tighty whities back in 7th grade. When I started gym in 7th grade, I realized I'd be changing in front of other guys. So I started wearing boxers so the other guys wouldn't laugh at my tighty whities. I wore those till 8th grade, when I switched to boxer briefs. Once 9th grade hit, first year of high school, I switched to boxers.
Then I started working at JC Penney during my junior year of high school. While there I found out that there are several types of briefs too. There are three types:
Full rise,
Mid rise, and
Low rise. A few months ago, the beginning of my sophomore year of college, I was looking at the low rise ones, and I decided to buy a pair to try out. I hadn't worn briefs in a long time, and my ex boyfriend had worn them. I tried em, I liked them a lot better than my boxers. I liked the "security" they gave me, and they looked good. I got them in black though, not white.
As a gay man, I personally think that Low Rise briefs are the sexiest underwear a guy could wear, if they can pull them off... er... I'm talking about the look... if they can pull of the look.

... Cause I mean, they'd look odd on one of substantial weight... I mean not to sound shallow or anything... Anyways, at the same time, full rise briefs are probably the worst looking underwear a guy could have... Mid rise briefs aren't bad, but they aren't sexy like low rise briefs are... And then boxer briefs look better than boxers.
