Middle-Easterners in "Discovery"

Also true in some social circles in the UK. It's definitely not a word for polite company, but it is used pretty casually in, well, less polite company.
That must be it. I hang out in polite company.. it's one (of a few) words I haven't desensitised myself to.
 
Yep, in the UK it is far less strongly gendered and nowhere near on the level of a racial slur. I hear it all the time (amongst working class people for the most part, less so middle/upper class). And I've heard many Australian friends use it casually or affectionately!
