Microsoft Silverlight VS Adobe Flash

Can anybody explain to me what the difference between Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight is? I've tried Googling it, but nothing really seemed relevant enough to clear up the issue. Did MS just invent Silverlight because they didn't want to use Adobe's product any more?

Never heard of Silverlight, most web pages, like this one wants you to use Flash.

Silverlight has a chance to be the eventual internet streaming video standard.
