Microsoft Office 2010

Just buy a computer now. PC's only come with trial versions of Office anyway, and I doubt that will change with Office 2010.

Just occurred ot me, I'm still using MSO 2003. Tried 07, really hated the rearranged menu/toolbar setup. Will a 'classic' option be available?

There is at least 1 add on app that makes the 2007 ribbon be arranged like the older ones. Still all blue though.

Here's one website discussing such an app.

I have just gotten used to the way it is on my home machine, even though I use 2003 at work.

Office 2010 isn't much different from office 2007 (outlook is updated to have the ribbon).

Ohh, me likee!

Brent, you raise a good point, which has been discussed elsewhere. As technology advances, users should be adjusting to the new interface, and there is certainly something to that argument. But a) having to learn new setups slows productivity, and b) why modify the interface so radically that users feel intimidated/ irritated by it?

As for me, I'd really prefer to not have to learn something new each time an app's upgraded

Why all the hate for the ribbon? I've been using Office since the early '90's. Well, Word, anyway. But I've used basically every version of "Office" from the mid-90's onward, and I really have no problem with the ribbon. Sure, it takes some getting used to, but I find it a lot more useful than the menu-hunting I had to do in prior versions. They streamlined the interface considerably. Excel is immensely more straightforward--all the features I use the most are right there in the ribbon, clear as day.

Interfaces change. They aren't as efficient right off the bat, because you have to learn them, but they can definitely become more efficient to use as you get accustomed. The whole point is to improve your overall productivity. Time spent hunting for things in a menu is now saved by a click to one of the tabs, then a second click on the appropriate action.

^ As I said, new interface, decreased productivity.

And I'm gettin' on in years. Old dog, new tricks. :)

But I'm an IT guy, so I have to, which is a pain in the arse.

Or, to put it another way, I don't know if the ribbon is that much more productive overall, that expansion of old systems in a clear manner might work just as well.

This may be a case of agree to disagree and YMMV.

Sorry for the big bump but the Beta for office 2010 is now out. If you don't Technet it's avaialble from the Public Beta website

http://www.microsoft.com/office/2010/en/default.aspx

It's available in 32 and 64bit versions and probably best installed on second machine -it doesn't seem to want to exist nicely with previous versions.

The Plus version takes about 2GB of disk space to install. The download (for 64bit version is a 780Mb download).

Microsoft have revamped the ribbon and it looks to be an improvement over 2007.

Groove is now called Sharepoint Workspace and integrates closely with Sharepoint 2010 (so Groove Server may be a thing of the past).

They've also redone the interface to Outlook.
