Sometimes the first person shooter players get a bit obsessive about their games but I'm not sure they can match of the hard core flightsimmers who go from multiple screens/computers right through to wiring up salvaged panels to make simulator cockpits.

I think you'll find the FPS gamers you're thinking of are obsessed with hardware, not FPS games. If you're running a 3-way SLI 9800GX2 rig then Crysis is a benchmark, not a game. If there was another genre that more consistently pushed the performance envelope they'd be into that instead.
