It may be peculiar to the rest of the world, but Americans have no problem thinking about ourselves in duality: I am an American, but if you ask me what I am, I will tell you I am Bermudian, because that is where my family is most recently from. It doesn't make me any less American by birth or by culture.

It's really not that hard a concept to grasp.
