Michael Vick: Philadelphia Eagle

I'm just surprised the Cowboys didn't take him. If it were last year, Jerry would have swooped him up. I guess he is serious about trying to clean house.

What if he'd killed his girlfriend and gotten out of prison because of overcrowding or a technicality or whatever? He would have served his time. Would you still be happy that he was helping your team, or is there a line?

No, there's no line for me, as long as he performs on the pitch.

Well, I care more about the sport where the ball is round and gets kicked across the field, don't really have such strong feeling in American Football. ;)
But yes, if he's good enough, he could be a convicted child rapist for all I care and I would welcome him on the team.

I was kind of hoping the Rams would take Vick, then it would be funny to hear the outrage from all the people who don't care about what Leonard Little did.

This is a very controversial decision and it's going to polarize people. Some are just focused on wanting to win at whatever the cost while others have emotions that will pull them in other directions. There is no right or wrong and I doubt either side will ever convince the other.

Every person deserves a shot at redemption. The Eagles want to give him a spot on their roster, they have the right to do that, and Vick deserves to pursue whatever career or work will have him. How much of a better story does it make if Vick has in fact changed?

He's working with the Humane Society. The Humane Society president is happy about this because he thinks Vick can make a positive difference for an apparent dogfighting problem in/around Philly (news to me). Tony Dungy is vouching for Vick, and McNabb and Reid are supportive of having Vick on the team. McNabb was asked and apparently completely supportive of the decision.

Again, Tony Dungy vouches for Vick. That counts for a lot.

At least Vick isn't a baseball player. Could you imagine the players union in that case?

"While what he did is illegal in the United States, there is nothing in our union bylaws against dog fighting, so you have no right take him away to prison and prevent him from earning a living."

He's working with the Humane Society so he can play football. It's part of his contract. It's required of him. Our local news media corrected the notion that Vick was doing this out of the goodness of his heart really quick.

You think he'd make the effort to set foot near an animal shelter if there wasn't cash in it for him big time? You think he'd volunteer out of the goodness of his heart? I can't believe people are that naive. People who engage in such level of hands on violence don't change. They're irretrievably broken. After personally brutalizing--electrocuting, strangling, drowning--hundreds and hundreds of dogs--you expect me to believe that Vick suddenly realizes it's wrong? People don't change. Not on that basic a level. He got caught, went to prison, and lost his dream job because of his image. So, he's changing his image so he can earn the money and prestige he wants.

Give me a physical break. If the Eagles cut him loose, Vick wouldn't give a damn about working at the Humane Society.

You got that right.

As for Tony Dungy vouching for him, hey--everyone has lapses in judgment. Dungy hasn't been right in the head since his son passed away. That's probably why he's vouching for Vick.

What was Vick thinking, going to Philly is bad enough if you are a well liked quarterback. The fans will eat him alive in Philly enough said. I thought he would go to Raiders or Tampa Bay because they are always collecting quarterbacks.

I thought he'd be a Raider too. They seem to like signing criminals.

And if Vick is a bust, Al Davis can just cut him and refuse to pay him.

No, of course I don't, because it would make more sense to never come near dogs or cats again to avoid the media circus which is likely to follow. And he may well yet not have truly changed, we'll see. But is the possiblity there? Of course.

Says who people don't change? You? People absolutely can change. It's the entire underpinning of, well, just about every major religious system out there, not to mention the whole point of prison-as-rehabilitation. If people can't be redeemed, then why don't we just shoot them, hmm? Save a drain on society and prevents them from doing more harm in the future.

Hey, maybe we had Malcolm X wrong in his change to nonviolence from violence. Maybe those slave owners who became ardent abolitionists, they were just doing it for the fame and fortune, since people can't change, right? Paul on the road to Damascus, definitely a poser.

Which is not to say that there aren't people, occasionally, who we lose. The Charles Mansons' and Jeffrey Dahlmers' of the world. And Vick may well be one. But there's no indication Vick is mentally ill or completely psychopathic, we are still dealing with a human here. The entire purpose of the prison system should be to rehabilitate people. If Vick's faking it, that'll come out in good time, and he'll be revealed as a hypocrite and liar to everyone.

As for Tony Dungy vouching for him, hey--everyone has lapses in judgment. Dungy hasn't been right in the head since his son passed away. That's probably why he's vouching for Vick.

That's... a bit disrespectful, don't you think? :wtf: Where do you get that Dungy hasn't been right since his son died?

Kestrel, do you own a dog? I am honestly curious about this.

I did. Family does, two - a basset and a golden lab mutt. I still miss my husky, walked her every night during high school. Best dog in the world. :( Anybody hurt her, I'd wanna tear their head off.

Vick was, maybe still is, a monster, no doubt about that. But he deserves a chance to show he's changed, or if not changed, at least won't do something that vile again. And we have to be willing to allow that possiblity, otherwise what's the point of rehabilitation programs?

Who's saying Vick shouldn't have a job? Should Vick have a 1.3 million dollar his first season job and have a chance to be a role model for kids? That's another matter. Let him work on a loading dock or in a factory away from the public eye. He can work. I'm not saying he shouldn't be allowed to work.

I'm sorry. I don't believe he'd make one bit of effort to work with the humane society if the potential to play football wasn't in it for him. Vick was always a thug. He had the opportunity to get away from being a thug when he received the opportunity to go to college and play professional football--an opportunity most only dream of. He didn't take that opportunity. He was forced away from being a thug. Now it's to his financial advantage to play the humane society route. There's a huge difference. If he wanted to change, if he were capable of change and of outgrowing his environment, he'd have done it willingly. Our prison systems don't rehabilitate. Not someone who's capable of that level of violence. Yes, I'm a cynic.
