News Michael Troughton joins Big Finish as the Second Doctor

News item

He’ll first appear in a crossover story with the recast Third Doctor in February, then in a July boxset of his own that, to judge by the title, is set in “Season 6B.”

The absence of a recast Second Doctor was kinda glaring, so I’m not surprised they’ve done this. I’m not the kind of sentimental that sees a point in recasting these parts with family members, but I’m sure Troughton will do a solid job.

Yeah, I would buy The Annihilators if someone else were writing it, but Briggs has terrible form when it comes to multi-Doctor stuff, and from what I’ve heard his Third Doctor work is pretty generic. Really wish he’d back away from acting like he’s the showrunner of BF Who and has to write all the high-profile introductory releases.

Briggs is capable of writing good, even excellent audio plays...but they're not that very often, unfortunately.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by this news. I haven't bothered with the recast First and Third Doctor adventures and I'm not keen on the recast Brigadier stories either, although I'm at least curious about the Sadie Miller stories if only because she's Lis' daughter and Tom approves of it. I guess by that logic, I should be fine with at least Troughton and Treloar (since Katy approves of the latter) and I did love David Bradley's take in An Adventure in Space and Time., but...I don't know. My mind is fickle. :p

The whole point is moot since I'm sooooo far behind on my Big Finish listening. Really need to get back to them.

I'm good with Treloar because it gives Katy Manning more work. I'm good with Bradley because he's been on TV. But Miller and Troughton just seem... unnecessary? Baker could just as easily be paired with a new companion, and while Hines is going to be in the Third Doctor story, I don't think he's going to be in Beyond War Games.

I would imagine Hines would be in Beyond War Games, since Jamie is in “The Two Doctors,” the story that’s primarily responsible for the idea of “Season 6B.” I know he’s not on the cast list yet, but then neither is anyone else bar Troughton. More generally, though, BF has clearly moved from “recasting as an opportunity to use surviving original cast in full-cast stories” to “recasting as an end in itself.”

The impression I got from BF's coyness around who would be in Beyond War Games was that it wouldn't have Hines. But that was just that, an impression. I could well be wrong.

With the robot dog with a sniper rifle on its head looking like a mean K-9…Wotan must still be online…
