The trailer for Michael Mann's biopic of John Dillinger is out. Starring Johnny Depp as Dillinger and Christian Bale as the cop on the hunt for him.

What a fantastic trailer. Michael Mann is in my top five best directors, and I have been eagerly waiting this. That trailer displays Mann's unparalleled visual flair and use of the camera. Just gorgeous.

This and Terminator Salvation. Two fantastic trailers in as many days.

It's gonna' be a good year in film. :)

Looks like fun. Quite a different atmosphere than the Mann films I've seen (Heat, Collatoral), but that's to be expected given the setting.

I quite like it, but I'm annoyed with modern music in a period film, even if just the trailer. But it's Michael Mann so of course I'll see it :)

Dunno, if you guys noticed this part, but there's a part in that trailer, at the beginning where Depp jumps over the counter, right before the Universal logo comes up, where it looks like a somewhat poor CG render of Depp's face, which makes you wonder why would Depp need a double for that part of the scene. Not like he's jumping from a rooftop or anything. Probably a scheduling conflict or something, during the filming of that scene. Haha, thought I'd point that out.

Also love the fact that more and more filmmakers are going digital, with the use of HD cameras like the Viper-cam, and Red One, etc.

I think Mann used this same camera on Collateral and Miami Vice and David Fincher used it recently on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

This Michael Mann guy sure knows his stuff, has he done anything I might've seen?

I... might see this. I guess.

Oh, that's simple. In that shot, Depp's face would be blurry. Look at the start of the jump, you can't see anything because of the motion blur. Why would that go away? It wouldn't; the entire jump was blurry.

But they want you to see that expression, so they fake it with computers.

Do you know why you called it "poor CG?" It's blended perfectly well. (It's flawless, actually.) So how can you tell? Well, because your brain knows its impossible...it's expecting that motion blur to continue...when it just goes away, your mind flags that and you know something's up.

In other words, that's as good as it could possibly be done. The only way to make it better would be to not do it at all.

This is one of my favorite periods in history, in one of my favorite cities, and I've been waiting for this since I took a wrong turn last May and ended up on a steet they were prepping for the film in Chicago.

And, God, Billy Crudup as Hoover looks nothing like Billy Crudup...

ahh, touche! Well played sir. I didn't even think of that. And I edit for a living. But now the question is what's the significance of showing his expression, which mind you was kind of a blank expression, in the first place. Why go thru all that time in post to do that for the trailer. Mental note, gonna have to look out for that shot when i watch the feature. I dunno, it just seems a bit random and out of place. But whatever. And you're right, the best CGI is the kind you can't tell is CGI. But if I and other people were able to spot it, couldn't necessarily be that seemless.
