Michael Madsen ,R.I.P.

Sorry to learn of his loss passing. He wasn’t the most versatile actor in the world (though was as adept as a rough and ready good guy as he was as a villain) but he had undoubted presence and menace. His Reservoir Dogs role is of course iconic. I wonder how his career would have gone if he’d played Vincent in Pulp Fiction (as was the original intention) instead of dropping out to do Wyatt Earp?

The obituary is credited to a Catherine Shoard, but holy cow did The Guardian blow it, I assume with their use of AI to write it. They had the wrong year for Reservoir Dogs, then claimed that Madsen reunited with Tarantino 11 years later for Pulp Fiction, which was two years later and Madsen wasn't even in. The obit has since been corrected.

I got an autographed photo of him (FROM him) in RESERVOIR DOGS for my brother.....asking him to write ''Behave yourself, Bob.'' They both did. I only wish MM had not cancelled his Q&A session that year. He's got 300 credits according to ABC News AND a staggering 17 upcoming films to be released. Not even Stephen King could top that.

Supposedly he had self-imposed financial issues where he wanted to maintain the lifestyle for his family that they had when he was getting regular work for big studios, but no one's star lasts forever and he was right up there with Eric Roberts and Danny Trejo for the sheer volume of work they said yes to (although I don't think Roberts and Trejo were hurting for money). A lot of lower budget DTVs will shell out some extra money to get a name that's somewhat recognizable to someone somewhere and put them on the cover even though they're barely in it.

So trying to keep up with the Joneses led to real financial issues. Sounded like he was about to get evicted.

I wonder if he could ever have had a comeback like Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler.

That was a really short comeback. He got all the acclaim for The Wrestler, got a nice paycheck for Iron Man 2, then was back in DTV.

Funny thing is, even with all the garbage on their resume that no one sees, they're still doing better than 90% of working actors in the union.
