The older generation can definitely do without it. Current generations (folks actively on this board) probably will survive.
The next generation is screwed. If there is a global internet outage for more than couple days, I truly believe society will collapse.
The fact that he actually addressed The Defector logically quite impressed me. This guy shows he knows what he's doing. While I choose not to swear in every day life, the F word really doesn't bother me. As for Vaping, it seems to me like Vaping and weed use has gotten more popular over the last 20 years, not less. Who is to say that in the 24th (it's almost the 25th) it isn't common practice or at least made a come back. Hell, some states now are legalizing Marijuana use. Seems to me Vaping might be more prevalent as life goes on, not less.
In A Very Special Episode of Picard, JL will show Raffi a planet where the native species has killed itself off by smoking deathsticks. We'll laugh, we'll cry, and we might even learn something.
Then Raffi will light up and comment, "it sucks to be them".
Probelm is - he didn't really based on Laris comment on "Romulans DON'T study Cybernetics; our coupters only perform numercal functions..."

There ARE no Romulan Cyberneticists or ANYONE working on Android or A.I. tech for THOUSANDS of years. If it's such a societal taboo, no there wouldn't be ANY Romulan Cyberneticists anywhere in the Empire - and none certainly bankrolled or acknowledged by the Romulan Military to the point an Admiral would make such an off hand comment to an Enemy.
So why did Admiral Jarok state there were on the TNG episode "The Defector"? Because back in 1990, no writer had come up with the plot point that Romulan society had a huge aversion to Artificial Intelligence and Androids. In the TNG era Romulans were perusing the same avenues of technology as every other Star Empire. Is it a retcon? Yes. Is the retcon that big a deal? No, not at all.

I do have internet (obviously), but I don’t have a smart phone. I live in a small town and am never too far from an actual computer if I need to look something up. I am not against them, but there’s no way I could justify the price. Not just the initial cost, but also the increased monthly cost of data plans, etc. So that I can check my email while at the (lone) grocery store? No thanks.
It wasn’t my cup of tea. What were the drawbacks?
I kind of don’t care about the world inside my brain if 1) I’m inside its, and 2) there’s oversight and checks and balances on the information/power. I’d love to be able to access all my information that’s now completely lost to me. I’m not too ashamed about my embarrassing secrets because 1) we all have them that chill our souls and 2) we’ll all be less bitchy with each other if we basically telepathically understand each other. You don't necessarily need a data plan. I've only got nominal data in my plan -- most places I go I don't get enough bandwidth to use it effectively anyway -- but free WiFi is ubiquitous here; my grocery store provides it, for instance, although YMMV. And a decent smartphone only costs $40 or so.
It's more convenient than having to type in tons of numbers on a touch tone phone system like the unemployment dept. in my area used to have.

So I asked on Chabon's Q&A instagram how Spock expected to save Romulus by destroying their sun with a black hole. I didn't expect an answer as my question was some days after the instagram QA debuted. However, surprisingly I got an answer within 4 minutes by Chabon that just said: #trekimponderables ...
Hardly fair to ask Chabon to explain storytelling issues that he had absolutely no involvement with.
Picard's (the show) m.o. has been to acknowledge the supernova, using it as a jumping off point, but not get bogged down in the nonsensical technical details, for which there can not possibly be a satisfactory answer.
The new Last Best Hope tie-in novel specifically calls it the Romulan sun going supernova. But these tie-ins aren't canon. In my opinion they should stick with the Star Trek Online Hobus explanation route, and I think far more play that game than read the tie-in novel.Bah - a REAL TOS era fan would have doe: #YATI
At least Chabon is aware of the inconsistency now. I posted a response saying I'll pretend the interviewer just generalized calling it the Romulan sun when it was just a star in Romulan space, though Chabon likely knows if future episodes this season contradict this headcanon or not.

I did the same thing.
Maybe we just need to accept that Laris is an aging, out of touch former Tal Shiar agent who doesn't know anything outside her area of espionage. It would be like asking James Bond to explain the engineering specifics of the gadgets he gets from Agent Q.
I get what you are saying, but my current plan is $10/month no contract, and my little old flip phone also connects to WiFi networks so I can check my email or something on the go in a pinch. It’s a royal pain in the butt to use it that way, but it can be done. I’ve yet to see the upgrade to a smart phone that won’t cost me at least 100 bucks a year. For me, it’s not really worth it. I just don’t have a need for what is being sold. Most people seem to want or need it, and that’s fine. I won’t try to convince you to downgrade if you have something that works for you.
Funny, it looks like the majority of people doing the work are NON-Romulans (IE yes, Romulans are administrating and doing some hands on (with the other species experts like Soji) but they're bringing in real researchers (with the proper technical background) from all over the Galaxy.
