Metaluna's big sister WIP...

I know that I am chiming in a bit late here, but this is the first time I came across this design. I have to say, based on the one look in the intitial image above, that I really like it. I'd personally prefer you to retain the Metaluna style livery and blue bussards, but there is something about your design ethic that I love. I wish that I could build physical models of your ships. They are positively sweet!

I am assuming that this project went no further... but is there any chance that I am wrong?

FatherRob! It's good to see you around! :D

As for the ship, I love it, myself. The splash of red that makes up the Bussards just fits perfectly with the redesign. I like the feel of it, as well.

Thanks, J. Allen!

I resurfaced for air about 2 or 3 months ago. I find I tend to do fits and phases about things in life. I'm in a geek phase now.

The red isn't bad, don't get me wrong... but it seems to indicate a change in technologies. Assuming that the forward domes on the nacelles are, in fact, bussard collectors, what would cause them to change glow colours in the span of the 20-40 years that might separate these two ships coming off the slips?

I suppose you could say that the hydrogen intake gives off a white light, and that the dome is coloured to produce the effect for asthetic reasons, but to me, if you are going to have glowing, energy-driven elements in your spacecraft design, then they are going to be low-heat and redshifted, or high-heat and blueshifted.

I guess I am a stickler for long-term, logical design sensibilities. :)

Another way to put it is that I am obsessive compulsive about things like this! LOL!

Well, don't be a stranger! :D

I just assume it's a protective coating, and that the resulting color changes are just a byproduct of the material itself.

I've never understood the "thread necrosis" kerfuffle... why wouldn't getting new attention for something be a good thing? I missed this one the first time around and wouldn't have seen how cool it was w/o the padre's *ahem* resurrection of it. Otherwise we should just lock or delete the old threads, which would be silly. Oh well...

...but a great ship! Thanks!

Well, old thread or not...I'm going to chime in. ;-) I like the overall design very much. It's sleek and nicely detailed. I don't tend to nit-pick about specific elements because I love seeing some creative license taken. If I had to pick out one thing though, I think it would be that I kind of miss the "notch" in the secondary hull below the hanger deck. I think if it was included (in some fashion) it might raise this design to another level and maintain a certain design standard we are used to seeing. But, overall, I really like it. :-)

I think that the fin arrangement beneath the shuttlebay (it looks like the radiator on my outdoor AC unit) is sculpted with the profile to suggest that, as the black fins would blend out under space conditions. That being said, keeping the more cigar-shaped hull does convey the 50's dynamic that the Metaluna design embodies, while adding enough flamiliar aspects to bring it more in line with both the JJPrise and the Gray Lady.

Ahhh, very good points. I misunderstood the nature of the design. Had to go back and read the original post again after reading yours. What you say makes perfect sense. I retract my previous statement. Except for the part where I like the ship. :-)

No, don't delete it! Thank goodness that it hasn't been deleted, otherwise I would have never seen it, or known it had existed!

I'm not to oriented toward retro, since I'm from after TNG first aired (so what do you expect!?), and I'm more detail oriented. But I find the curves and lines to be pleasant overall.

At first, I felt that putting the torpedo launchers on the neck wasn't the best idea. I have the same issue with JJPrise: if the launcher(s) happens to get hit while there is an armed torpedo in there, the ship would probably be destroyed. Later ships would have them in the neck since advances in shields and structure would help to compensate for this possibility, or the torpedoes by then would only be armed remotely or automatically before impact. I would have put the torpedo launchers above the sensor dome, like the original Enterprise. Then I realized that the torpedo launchers complement the stretched out neck.

I agree with Ensign Ro that I kind of miss the undercut under the shuttlebay, but I feel it also gives her distinctiveness.

Old thread? mwah whatever, nice ships, I do think the larger one should have the same angle in her nacelle pylons, as for the rest, very nice and sleek design. :bolian:
