Metaluna's big sister WIP...

judexavier

Commander
Red Shirt
Well, after seeing Herkimer Jitty's May Contest thread, I decided to post this up, unfinished, just to get some feedback...
I've got tons of sketches and scraps concerning what will be in the 5-views, I think I've figured out all the odd bits and
angles...still messing with the impulse area...without proper shading some of the contours are a little unclear-sorry. :(

Is this too "flash gordon" looking? I was going for something sleek, hopefully attractive, that was related to the metaluna "look"...(oh, the silly "tailfeathers" are just a placeholder...she doesn't have afterburners).

I've been fascinated with the whole idea of "pre-trek" for awhile. (Check out the Aridas/Masao body of work - which is simply put amazing, anyone who might not be aware, please click http://www.starfleet-museum.org/ and http://federationreference.prophpbb.com/)
(and "Enterprise" certainly tried to illuminate this period in the chronology), but I've settled on the concept of "X-ships" or
"Ships hat never were-the experimental ships of Starfleet" as a sort of theme (and canon-reason? LOL) for some of these things existing?

It's good fun, and keeps me out of trouble! :)

Re: Metaluna's big sisiter WIP...

Don't take this wrong, but yuch! Evokes the nuprise too much for my taste. Your Metaluna is way better.

Re: Metaluna's big sisiter WIP...

This may sound like my ego talking, but I thought this would have something to do with me when I saw the thread title.

I mean, it still is my ego talking, just not as much now.

Well, I did ask for feedback...:) I don't take things wrong, or get defensive...:)
Yeah, I have to say I really am a fan of the "Nu-Ryan Church blended-2ndary hull" look...I see what you are saying though...
Back to the drawing board :)

Well, it did, in that the lines and shapes you used very much reminded me of some of the things I've been sketching...
and, again, nice work on your May entry, I like that one. :)

Re: Metaluna's big sisiter WIP...

Very buetiful Design there :) :techman:

my only crit: Get the cover off the Nav. Deflector dish

I actually would have liked to have this as the NuTrek Enterprise cus you used Red Bussard collecters like the TOS one cept your are much darker :)

Re: Metaluna's big sisiter WIP...

Yeah, I have to say that I actually really do like this design... it looks 1950's-ish, but in a good way, as if the WHOLE ship was designed with that in mind, not just altered a bit here and there, like the J.J.-Prise. So, I personally like it.

Re: Metaluna's big sisiter WIP...

Leave the cover over the dish...looks more streamlined that way. Overall, looks good!

Re: Metaluna's big sisiter WIP...

My only opinion? Don't change a thing! :bolian:

Seriously! Looks like a perfect 'sequel' ship (for lack of a better term) to the Metaluna, and maintains the same aesthetic sensibilities really well. Too many follow-up designs lose that certain 'something' that made the original work.

Liking also the more Constitution-y features, such as the red bussards and decals (like the use of the UFP badge on the side, too!).

And as for the criticism of it being 'too much like the JJprise', while I can see the similarities and influence, this differs from it by being a completely original design with it's own style. Part of my problem with the new movie ship is that it looks like someone took the classic ship, and then 'hot-rodded' it afterwards as a way of looking 'retro'. These ships work because they were designed with a 'retro-futuristic' look from the start, rather than details being tweaked as an afterthought.

(By the by, the other problem I have with the JJprise is that it's in many ways a careless 'fudging' of the TOS and TMP styles - yet, interestingly, as with the 'retro' look in this instance, a better blending of the looks can work, as MadMan's Defiant proves so well)

So, in short, let it happen as you see fit. You've clearly got a fully-fledged design sense for these ships, so any compromise, and you risk losing that great look that you've created in the Metaluna. I can't wait to see the completed ship!

And orthos. Can't have a good ship design without orthos! (j/k - I keed!) ;)

Hmm... wonder if MadMan's got enough free time to make a start on this one, too...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[EDIT] So, I spend ages writing all that waffle, and meanwhile... :

...someone else says the exact same thing, but in a fifth as many words (at least). Typical...!

Re: Metaluna's big sisiter WIP...

I don't know if I "like" the cover over the nav dish. But it looks like it "belongs" there.

I've always said that designs that are perfect simply don't look believable. There has to be a lightly awkward bulge here, and a odd access hatch there, which suggest that some real equipment and machinery is stuffed in there, and the designers had to make allowances in their forms to make way for function.

That cover looks like a pragmatic functional necessity, and should remain.

Re: Metaluna's big sisiter WIP...

I dont see anything wrong with it at all, very smooth and retro-future.

I agree with the above, both about your design and the elements that distinguish it from the JJPrise.

I like this a LOT! Looking forward to seeing some other views. Thanks for sharing. :bolian:

The only part that seems a bit off to me is the pylon. I guess it's meant to evoke refit E, but I'm just seeing nuE's pylon turned upside down.

Wow. This is awesome. :)

I like it all , except for the impulse engine area, which you said you were still working on, anyway. If you can, keep that area more simple... It's a little hard now to see how it connects to the primary hull. Once you get it refined a little more, I am definitely onboard to build it. :)

I know that I am chiming in a bit late here, but this is the first time I came across this design. I have to say, based on the one look in the intitial image above, that I really like it. I'd personally prefer you to retain the Metaluna style livery and blue bussards, but there is something about your design ethic that I love. I wish that I could build physical models of your ships. They are positively sweet!

I am assuming that this project went no further... but is there any chance that I am wrong?

HOLY FREAKIN' NECROPOST, BATMAN!!!!

Seriously, though, try PMing the thread starter first before putting a new post in a thread that's over a year old. Just sayin'...

I wasn't aware that there was a time limit on the TrekBBS to responding to a non-culled post. I have never seen anything about it in the board rules. I did a search for threads about the Metaluna (which I recently discovered), this thread came up as a match, and I felt compelled to post.

I didn't think of PMing the OP mainly because I get about 2 or 3 minutes an hour to break away and visit the boards while I am at work and it didn't occur to me.
