Metallica - Death Magnetic

Just finished listening to the album, and I think it's phenomenal. It's like an awesome culmination of everything they've ever done, but drawing largely from the Ride/Puppets/Justice era, and I for one feel totally blown away by it. Every song is excellent. In fact, I think I may even be suffering from minor shock over how good it is.
This album was five years in the making, and in my opinion, Metallica haven't wasted a second of that time. They've absolutely nailed it with Death Magnetic. The kings of metal are well and truly back.

Oh and for those who may decide to whine about the fact that I downloaded it early, you'll be pleased to hear that I just went on Amazon and ordered the album.

So, anyone else heard it yet? What do you think?

It comes out in the U.S. on September 12th, so I'm still waiting.

J.

I was a huge Metallica fan growing up, who knows how many time I've seen them in concert, but after St. Anger's shit, I pretty much wrote em off. Especially after the way Newsted got treated.

I haven't decided if I'll listen to this album yet.

I've downloaded Cyanide, The Day That Never Comes and My Apocalypse.

Awesome songs! With Day, I love how (like One) half way through it speeds up and proceeds to kick your ass.

If you like old school Metallica, but weren't a fan of St Anger, then I'd urge you to give this one a listen. It's a monumental improvement over St Anger.

All that I've seen/heard is what they put on MySpace and Mission Metallica. However, I do like what I hear. The Old-School is back, baby.

St. Anger was such a disappointment. It was worse than getting that toy you wanted all year on Christmas morning, only to discover that it wasn't much fun. I still want my $14 back for that worthless piece of ****.

I'm no Metallica fan. In fact only songs I really ever liked was One, The Unforgiven and Unforgiven Too.

Anyway this album has nothing special, no song stands out, not even one single. And Unforgiven 3 doesn't even sound like an Unforgiven song. The album sounds like something your average local metal band would produce.

Sorry Metallica, better luck next time but hey if the next album also sucks you can blame it on this album being leaked online and sue the Internet.

So far, I'm heard The Day that Never Comes, My Apocolypse, Unforgiven III, and Cyanide and I'm impressed so far. I really wanted to hear Unforgiven III when I first heard about it since I love the first two, and I was kind of surprised. This is an album I probably will get.

This shit is pretty frickin' awesome. But then, I'm the kind of Metallica fan that's had this preordered since before I heard a second of it.

I'll probably download it, but I think that the band are such big douchebags that I am not sure if I want to pay for it. This is coming from a guy who makes a point to buy music.

, I pretty much wrote em off. Especially after the way Newsted got treated.

You think that's bad? I'm still pissed they got rid of Mustaine. I mean we got Megadeth out of it, but imagine how much better a lot of Metallica would have been if Mustaine wasnt kicked out.

I'm pretty much an old school Metallica fan (Black album onwards is pretty subpar), but for some reason I love St. Anger. I know everyone says it's crap, blah blah blah, but I enjoy it.

^^ I think Mustaine plus Het and Lars would have been too much ego for a single unit and would have led to a meltdown sooner than later.

I loved Metallica growing up but kind of lost the feeling after Napster and rehab and all that.

Mustaine's a big douchbag, how many people he fire from Megadeth? At least 2 guitarists just because he can't get along with anyone and is a jackass, then there's the whole thing with the way he fucked over Nick Menza.

Since my first post, I've listened to the album. It's nowhere near as awful as St. Anger.

It's a good rock album, I'll need to listen more before I totally critique it. It sounds like a cross between Justice and Load.

Justice because of the lack of stand out bass guitar, and the guitar work is mushed together most of the time without a strong differentiation between rhythm and lead until stand out points.

I'll need to listen to it more.

Not a fan, won't buy it or listen to it. However I would rather people listen to this than casting show stars or Mark Ronson trash.

I have it but haven't listened to it yet...

I've only heard the 3 songs that were available so far. I liked My Apocalypse and The Day That Never Comes but not so much Cyanide.

I hope the rest of the album is as good as you say.

Yeah, a friend of mine feels the same way. If things could have worked out I would have loved to see this set up for Metallica:

Lars, James, Cliff (if he didnt die) and Mustaine. I know they had a different bass player before Mustaine drove him off but that's the four guys I wish were in Metallica now. Nothing against Hammet, who's an excellent guitarist btw.

What do you have against Cyanide? I actually enjoy it more than My Apocalypse.

Well, this is good news, after the St. Anger album sacrilege I was worried the sh**** new sound would be perminant. If this new album is as good as people say I might have to pick it up.
