The only difference is who in the family was murdered.
Han Solo in TFA, Chewie dying in the Dark Horse comic books.

Yeah, but the EU did it better!!!!!!!!!!! or something like thatHan Solo in TFA, Mara Jade Skywalker in a later novel....by the same (basically) person...the Dark Side turned Solo son.
There's a big difference between a novel killing off a beloved character, much less one never seen on screen, and one that is shown in screen getting the laser sword thru the gut by his lack luster whiny brat kid, in a cliche reminiscent of TESB..Yeah, but the EU did it better!!!!!!!!!!! or something like that
Sorry, as much as I like some of the Legends EU, Jacen's fall to the Dark Side and killing Mara Jade was just too much. People complain that TFA undoes ROTJ but that was already done in the books! In what story do the Big Three get a "happily ever after?"

No, there really isn't if the complaint is that the Big Three don't get a happily ever after ending. There's a big difference between a novel killing off a beloved character, much less one never seen on screen, and one that is shown in screen getting the laser sword thru the gut by his lack luster whiny brat kid, in a cliche reminiscent of TESB..

And yet, TFA "ruined" the story by killing Han...I never really saw a happily ever after for the OT character since I followed the EU, and there definitely were no happily ever afters there.
I mean, think about. His aunt and uncle were totally protective of him, never allowing him to make his own choices. They seem to know about his father, so they're scared. Comes along Ben, who basically says 'you should stop listening to what those people are telling you, and do exactly as I tell you'. No free choice at all.
Next up, Ben is killed and he's roaming around the galaxy as a hunted man basicly. Untill a ghost tells him to go somewhere and be told again what to do and trust his faith into some unseen Force. He's basicly told that recueing his loved ones is not allowed. Then he finds out his father isn't dead, but an evil tyrant. AND it turnes a man he wanted to trust never even told him he had a sister.
With only basic training in the Force, he's now also given the order to rebuild the Jedi Order (pass on what you have learned). This totally backfires, and his own kin slaughters the whole bunch of his students.
Really, messed up and scared Luke from the trailer makes total sense.
Now, yes. That was a silly post, I understand. But, I know some fans are disappointed at the portayel of Luke in the new trailer. But really, look at what he's been going through all his life. There was no true stable core in his world. Even the upbringing by his aunt and uncle had a root in fear. A dapper hero would have been awesome, but this idea of a man on the brinck of loosing his last shred of sanity..... It makes more sense I think.

I don't understand. What are you trying to get at? What led Luke to be "messed up"? His upbringing or the deaths of his apprentices, years later?
There is no true stability in the world, no absolutes or guarantees. Not really. Everyone exists at the mercy of the chaotic nature of this world.

Exactly. Which is why it is confusing that individuals (not you per se) are annoyed that TFA "ruined the Big 3's happy ending. When, in fact, even in the books, they did not have it and that life in general is very difficult.I don't understand. What are you trying to get at? What led Luke to be "messed up"? But, TFA is bad because it ruined ROTJ.![]()

For a time. And then it all collapses. The New Jedi Order is still around, there is still a functioning galactic democracy and Han and Leia are still together. I say that still beats the sequels where Luke is largely a failure and Han has abandoned Luke and Leia.
