Messed up Luke makes sense...

Han Solo in TFA, Mara Jade Skywalker in a later novel....by the same (basically) person...the Dark Side turned Solo son.
Yeah, but the EU did it better!!!!!!!!!!! or something like that ;)

Sorry, as much as I like some of the Legends EU, Jacen's fall to the Dark Side and killing Mara Jade was just too much. People complain that TFA undoes ROTJ but that was already done in the books! In what story do the Big Three get a "happily ever after?"

There's a big difference between a novel killing off a beloved character, much less one never seen on screen, and one that is shown in screen getting the laser sword thru the gut by his lack luster whiny brat kid, in a cliche reminiscent of TESB..

Big difference.

When was a major character stabbed with a lightsaber by a family member in ESB? I honestly have no idea what you are talking about there.
Are you talking about Vader cutting of Luke's hand? I don't see any similarities there.
Han being frozen in carbonite? Don't see that either.

It actually is a big difference. As In DV was a total dick trying to win point for both himself and the Emperor. While TFA still leaves it in between as to wether Han killed himself or if Kylo did it. And The New Trilogy is still establishing itself, where the PT and OT are established. You can't put motive behind Kylo yet. Some of the shots from the seem to hint toward him letting go of his Dark Side self, while other shot tend to establish him as Snoke's bitch. So, no. You can't compare character arcs untill they're done.

No, there really isn't if the complaint is that the Big Three don't get a happily ever after ending.

Also, Kylo doesn't remind me of ESB in any way, so that criticism makes no sense.

I never really saw a happily ever after for the OT character since I followed the EU, and there definitely were no happily ever afters there.

I mean, think about. His aunt and uncle were totally protective of him, never allowing him to make his own choices. They seem to know about his father, so they're scared. Comes along Ben, who basically says 'you should stop listening to what those people are telling you, and do exactly as I tell you'. No free choice at all.

Next up, Ben is killed and he's roaming around the galaxy as a hunted man basicly. Untill a ghost tells him to go somewhere and be told again what to do and trust his faith into some unseen Force. He's basicly told that recueing his loved ones is not allowed. Then he finds out his father isn't dead, but an evil tyrant. AND it turnes a man he wanted to trust never even told him he had a sister.

With only basic training in the Force, he's now also given the order to rebuild the Jedi Order (pass on what you have learned). This totally backfires, and his own kin slaughters the whole bunch of his students.

Really, messed up and scared Luke from the trailer makes total sense.

Now, yes. That was a silly post, I understand. But, I know some fans are disappointed at the portayel of Luke in the new trailer. But really, look at what he's been going through all his life. There was no true stable core in his world. Even the upbringing by his aunt and uncle had a root in fear. A dapper hero would have been awesome, but this idea of a man on the brinck of loosing his last shred of sanity..... It makes more sense I think.

I'm in complete agreement. And what's more, he's in an even worse mental and emotional shape to be a teacher to Rey than Ben or Yoda were to teach him.

I don't understand. What are you trying to get at? What led Luke to be "messed up"? His upbringing or the deaths of his apprentices, years later?

There is no true stability in the world, no absolutes or guarantees. Not really. Everyone exists at the mercy of the chaotic nature of this world.

The post itself explains itself. The questions you asked are answered in it.

If anything one point of consistency will be that those who didn't care for the later direction of post-ROTJ books are likely to not be a fan of the Sequel Trilogy too. Legacy of the Force, though now a Legends story, hasn't lost its controversy over the years, nor its sequels, Fate of the Jedi and Crucible. It's why quite a few people who had enjoyed other stories gave the new material a chance - whatever happened couldn't be worse. Well, about that...

As to a happy ending, it comes down to picking your jumping off point: The conclusion of The Unifying Force for the New Jedi Order works for some, though Chewie and one of the Solo kids are dead. Another is Vision of the Future, where Zahn tied up what he started with Heir to the Empire.

Exactly. Which is why it is confusing that individuals (not you per se) are annoyed that TFA "ruined the Big 3's happy ending. When, in fact, even in the books, they did not have it and that life in general is very difficult.

But, TFA is bad because it ruined ROTJ.

FIFTY.

The New Jedi Order is still around, there is still a functioning galactic democracy and Han and Leia are still together. I say that still beats the sequels where Luke is largely a failure and Han has abandoned Luke and Leia.

Things get better. Things get worse. I thought messed up Luke was great. It's what I was kinda expecting.

You clearly didn't actually read the stories or you'd know that didn't happen. The New Jedi Order survive the return of the One Sith and are largely able to preserve their structure and help overthrow the Sith with the Imperial Remnants and the Alliance military.

The Jedi rise and fall many times, as do the Sith. Every indication is that the Jedi will rise again with Rey.
