Merv Griffin w/Shatner, Nimoy, & Kelley on Star Trek

Merv Griffin was an American TV personality who created TV shows including the enduring game shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. His name is as memorable or obscure as Quinn Martin, Glen A. Larson and Steven Bochco, depending on your age.

Up until he died a little more than a year ago, he was also known as the guy whose success in real estate investment had made him even richer than Donald Trump.

In addition, on the Merv Griffin Show from which this was taken, Merv's second banana for many years was the excellent Arthur Treacher (whose name may be familiar to those across the pond) though he died several years before this particular installment aired.

I think more contemporary versions (at least as far as TV goes, and in addition to Bochco) would be Aaron Sorkin, Seth McFarlane (in the near future) and, fittingly enough, J.J. Abrams.

Never heard of Merv Griffin? Seriously?
I'm not sure his variety show ever aired outside the U.S., (the OP is in Scotland) and some of the shows (as Jeopardy!) which he created and/or produced here had their own licensed versions in other countries and thus may not have had the "Merv Griffin Entertainment" and gryphon logo appearing at the end.
I suppose you've never heard this famous song either?

I've never heard of it, which doesn't necessarily mean it's not famous. It seems to have been popular well after Dr. D went into syndication and I stopped listening. (I don't recognize the name Gary Muller, either, but YMMV.)

I always preferred Merv over Mike Douglas. I think one of his early claims to fame was the song "I've Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts."

I was kidding of course. It just cracks me up that a song like this was ever even written. I don't know who Gary Muller is either.

Can't blame him for not knowing who Merv is, the UK has lots of famous personalities we have not heard of in the States. Look at Patrick Stewart, most of us over here never heard of him till TNG.

Excepting sci-fi fans that is, who immediately recognized him from the (horrible) movie adaptation of Dune. *grin*

What's stranger to me is that I had no idea Merv Griffin was still on the air into the 80's!!!

I love old interviews and stuff like this. This is the sort of stuff that should be included as DVD specials. It's already made, only need the rights, it would be cool on the Blu-Ray when that is done. It's critical to preserve this stuff for the future.

It's weird, watching the "clip" from the film in the context of the interview is sort of like seeing it again for the first time.

Well you have to understand that in 1982 the UK still only had three TV channels(BBC1,BBC2 and ITV), with the forth (Channel 4)launching that very year in early november.......so movie news wise all we had was Barry Normans Film (add year) to tell us what was happening in the movie world.........I mean i actually only say TWOK sometime in 1984 on video just before TSFS was released, and then i saw that round about 1985 on video.
