I've always seen the Nyberrite Alliance as a sort of Foreign Legion, an old race that hires members of other races to fill out their space fleet.

Way of the Warrior, Worf mentioned them when he was considering resigning from Starfleet.

Honestly we know absolutely nothing about the Nyberite Alliance, even the novels haven't referenced them in any manner.

That's why I'm guessing the Nyberite alliance is relatively distant from the main action of DS9/TNG and the novels that continue their stories. Perhaps on the other side of the BQ or something.

Come to think of it there are a few times world's are mentioned that are known but great distances(as in long times away). There is that planet Varala that appears to be somewhere in the GQ, there was Tau Alpha C-which was apparently charted but very distant from Federation space.

So that leads me to believe there are known world's and civilizations to the Federation but because of astropolitical realities and the distances involved have not been visited by the Federation.

The Nyberite alliance does appear to be some sort of foreign legion, or mercenary organization or some cross between them. Jadzia remarks that it is a great distance away and if Worf joined he'd probably never see them(the crew of DS9) again.

Jadzia says no such thing and isn't even in a scene in which the Nyberrite Alliance is mentioned. The two scenes in which the NA is mentioned both involve Worf, with the first having O'Brien, and Sisko in the second one.

The mentions are:

WORF: Yes. I leave this afternoon.

SISKO: Sometimes. But it also reminds me of what I've gained, and who I am. Oh, I can throw away the uniform, resign my commission, run all the way to the Nyberrite Alliance, but it really wouldn't matter. A Starfleet officer. That's what I am, and that's what I'll always be.

I don't see how there's enough evidence to suggest they are a foreign legion or mercenary organization or anything related to the two concepts. And while O'Brien does note the NA is a distance away, his concern is about Worf seeing Alexander, not the rest of the DS9 crew. This implies the NA operates away from Earth, where Alexander was living at the time, although I concede O'Brien wouldn't have mentioned Worf never being able to see the rest of the DS9 crew since at the time, he wasn't yet one of the crew and he'd have no reason to stay in touch with any of them.

Yeah I see the Nyberites as a minor league alliance of worlds who are happy to take on experienced officers from other powers, like Starfleet or the KDF, because they want folk to train their guys. They're not mercs so much as they are the bush league "'Stan" nations in the Middle East who'll hire former US or Russian military types to train their forces.
