MemoryAlpha editor refuses to change Adira's Gender to "Non-Binary"

Hmmm. I don't edit at MA, and I have mixed feelings on the removal of the field(s), because I have edited at Wikipedia and I have been involved in discussions wherein it was felt that certain fields were so contentious/prone to abuse that the best option was to remove those fields and leave the matters to be discussed in prose instead. In other words, they were felt to be too complex to be handled via simple infoox values.

That said, I have no familiarity with this character, so I'm very much approaching this from an uninformed perspective.

I don't even understand the point the dingus is making that "Adira is physiologically female" because even if you buy into gendered bodies Adira has a pretty damn androgynous one. I don't perceive their body as feminine at all.
It’s just transphobia. That’s the same excuse transphobes use to justify forcing trans women to use men’s rooms when it’s just putting them in harm’s way.

Andorians have 4 genders, how it that dealt with on the site? Or is it okay for aliens but not for humans?

Memory Alpha refusing a specific plot point for a character is terrible for them and their reputation, let alone the homophobic nature of it which makes it worse.
Some people find it easier to accept fictional aliens than other humans due to their own bigotry.

It's fucked up. It is. But I guess it's his sandbox and if you want to play in it then you need to accept that he's got the final say. It's not right but that's how it is.

The more obvious precedent to me is Data and Lal. Did they have them down as male and female respectively? If so, then the biology argument is right out the window; because they don't have any biology. Indeed, Lal specifically chose her gender, so if that's not respecting someone's pronouns, I don't know what is.

And I used to think that Memory Beta was being run as a private kingdom for the guy running that place... At least that didn’t involve active trans/enbyphobia...

With this getting the attention of higher ups at both Trek and Paramount, I’m sure this will have no greater repercussions on the state of fandom wikis, in the same way that Axanar getting their attention had no impact on fanfilms.

Seriously, it’s literally right there in the text, and this admin would sooner spew transphobic rhetorical trash...

I think you're stretching here TBH. I doubt Paramount are going to be taking legal action against Memory Alpha. Fan films producing new output with licenced properties and characters is something entirely different.

Never underestimate a corporate desire to protect its brand interest. If they think it’s damaging, they will lash out and be indiscriminate about it, so I’d sooner err on overcaution.

I honestly don't think a fan-made Star Trek Wiki not recognising this is going to concern Paramount. I don't think it's going to damage anyone's brand other than Memory Alpha's.

A Sysop user, Tim Thomason, reverted the changes and put Gender: Non-Binary on Adira's page.

@Tim Thomason is that you?

Memory-Alpha doesn't consider that line in 'Data's Day' to mean Andorians have 4 genders, only that 4 people are in the marriage. The line is vague enough to be either way.
Andorian weddings required groups of four people, except under certain circumstances. (ENT: "Cease Fire", "Proving Ground", "Babel One"; TNG: "Data's Day")

The Apocrypha section does mention the fact the novel writers took that line to mean gender.

Sweet shit. Now matter how you look at this, it makes it embarrassing to be a Trek fan right now. In a best case scenario it paints Trek fans as being so dedicated to Almighty Canon and The Words Spoken Onscreen that we can not call an obviously non-binary person non-binary because that was not explicitly Stated Onscreen. Which makes us look like fucking idiots. In a worst case scenario, it paints Trek fans as transphobic bigots, which makes us look like fucking assholes and pieces of shit.

What a fucking shitshow this is.

Yep. Its especially disappointing to Trans Trek fans who have to put up with shit in places that are supposed for fun.

I’m a trans woman and I remember posters talking about how Trek should never have trans characters because it’s been “cured” in the future. Years before some said the same about gay people. There are a lot of backwards people in the fandom, all fandoms really.

God... Sorry to hear that. it seems no matter where we go transphobes try to strike us down. Even in Fandoms where their actions are the very anthesis of show's message.
