The plot gets disguised a bit by the sheer volume of jokes. The same thing happens with Airplane!, which surprised me when I watched Zero Hour! (which Airplane! is a nearly shot-for-shot remake of), and found Airplane! is actually better narratively; combining the main character's ex and the lead stewardess gives her more to do in the movie, and shifting their kid to be a background character who's part of another family helps keep the character focus on their relationship without the "Should we stay together for our child?" aspect complicating it.
