Meditation

I meditate intermittently. Mostly I need it because my work consists of long chunks of focussing on a client and their issues and I need the mental rest. I seldom take time out to sit, though.

In terms of focus, a really complex knitting pattern can do it. Or losing myself in a book. But sitting staring at the waves or watching the clouds for ten minutes between clients is really helpful.

I guess I use exercise as a form of meditation, especially endurance cardio. There is a very meditative quality to keeping a steady, rhythmic pace (I used to do it jogging but after I broke my foot I switched to biking). When I'm on an exercise bike as opposed to a real bike, I can close my eyes and go for hours barely realizing the time passing.

The closest to meditation I've ever come is mindless grinding in RPGs. It certainly can clear the mind and induce a... trance-like state.
That's me too. Playing certain games helps me to relax and just take a break from rl.

Yeah, certain video games can be great way to relax. Personally I relax best to simple arcade-style action games that allow my mind to shut down and my reflexes to take over.

Meditation is very important. It's when I could relax and settle things. Usually I try to while running/working out. Majority of the time I work out alone, it's a guarantee that I can run my body and not my mouth. Or while swimming...just floating there and thinking about nothing while hearing the water flow through my ears.

I've tried meditation on and off for at least thirty years and it never works out. There's too many stories and images whirling around in here. The best I can do is focusing on certain types of imagery from certain times in my life. For example, back in the early 70s I used to sleep out in the back yard on Summer nights. I bring myself back there and let my mind roam over the details; the stars in the sky, the breeze in the trees, the smell of the woods, the sounds of the frogs and crickets. Then sometimes I think about a long drive through rural Connecticut in Winter in the early 80s, watching the wide empty fields go by. Sometimes it's a fine line between peace of mind and melancholy. :rommie:

It's not about abating the river's flow, but rather it's about redirecting it to where the water needs to reach. Don't hold it back, guide it, make it flow into a single stream of consciousness, and direct it where it needs to go. Mastery of this skill will bring order, and peace of mind.

[/like a fucking Zen Master]

And it will make things grow. ;)

Indeed it will, and things that grow can be mighty important, not only to the one who carries the seed, but also the soil that it tills.

I've meditated several times and although I don't do it often, each time I've done it I have felt incredibly calm, yet invigorated. It's always been a positive experience. I get the same sort of calm invigoration feeling after I've had a massage.
