It may sound silly today, but I think a lot* of people thought that TV only showed "real" things back then, as if the people were actually married and a family on Father Knows Best or Leave it to Beaver.
*And by a lot, I mean enough that it's bothersome, not a huge percentage. I remember reading on one show I liked from the 80s that the main character was going to shoot directly at the screen at the begining of the episode, the censors wanted it changed to an off angle so no one at home would get scared of being shot or have a heart attack. Really.
