McCoy: Frontier Doctor....

Thanks for the heads up, Warped9.

I'd sworn off IDW after being let down by a few expensive, mediocre efforts, but I'll give this one a go based on your review.

The stories were a bit inconsequential and short but they were great fun. It should come as no surprise that McCoy can easily carry a series on his own. Plus I love any stories set in the TMP period.

The stories were not "saving the galaxy" types, but then a lot of TOS' weren't either. And that's okay as long as they're well told. Actually I think that makes the stories more credible because they're not always "saving the galaxy." I also like that they manage to add another dimension to the TOS/TMP universe, that the Federation dispatches small medical teams to trouble spots. It also feels more frontier like.

What I love is that they add another dimension to the universe while fitting into the universe just about perfectly!

I've read a few novels based on the idea of filling in the events set between TOS and TMP and none of them have been as satisfactory as this in my opinion. It just felt right. And it seemed more like something McCoy would do rather than trying to envision him quietly pursuing a private practice on Earth.

John Byrne has a site called Byrne's Robotics with forums for discussing all manner of things and where you can see samples of his art as well as discussions regarding some of his work and projects.

I must say I quite like Byrne's starship designs. They have a genuine feel to them that looks right for the era.
