Between his time on Earth ("First Contact", "Broken Bow") and his arrival on the Companion's planet (TOS), Cochrane should be founding the colony on Alpha Centauri. Hence the episode "Metamorphosis" calls him "Zefram Cochrane of Alpha Centauri."

Maybe he did lead the colonization of Alpha Centuari after First Contact, and only briefly returned to Earth in the early 22nd century to make the dedication speech for the Warp Five Complex.
